So it seems trying to mask tells is still a thing even among theoretically sound players. So why the stigma against sunglass wearers?
Interesting question.

The reason I link it to poor players is similar to poker/gambling tattoos. I think they are trying to look cool, they think of poker and gambling as glamorous, they focus more on image than substance.

I guess many winning players, especially who started out during the boom, had some similar ideas when they began and succeeded by just being a little less clueless than others. It was commonly thought that it was good to be intimidating at the table. Though the real advantage of shades is that you can stare at V and closely scrutinize him without him knowing.

Speaking for myself, I still put a lot of emphasis on tells. However, I don't want to intimidate anybody, nor give myself away as a serious player. I try to be subtle about watching people and don't think I miss much that I'd see with shades. I also want the game to be relaxed and fun. Rolling in with your hoodie, shades, earphones, etc. is a little like bringing an expensive, custom cue to a pool hall. But since many regard sun glass wearing as the sign of a poorer player, maybe it's all come full circle.

I used to buy the cheap sunglasses at the Walgreens when I went down to Las Vegas for the summer. The ones with polarized lenses had a sticker saying POLARIZED on them. I'd deliberately leave the sticker on.

Many skilled poker players couldn't resist making jokes about calling me down with bottom pair, etc.

I learned to leave those tables quickly. The sunglasses practically did the game selection for me.
