i think in america a NON-Profit org doesn't actually have to spend a certain amount of their donations to actually help the people their set up to help..

i read that during the Wyclef Jean incident for Haiti ....

From what i understand i could set up a Non-profit in USA receive 100million in donations and only spend 30million helping anyone and 70million on a nice "office"

That is true. It just has to be for a charitable, educational or scientific PURPOSE.

If you really want to help, donate your money to a reputable charity. Avoid the ones with religious backing or the ones who refuse to publicize their finances.

In short, put your money in your bank account. Unless you are some hedge fund manager looking for a serious tax break your money is better served sitting in your bank account for when you need it the most.

Why should people avoid the ones with religous backing? It is your choice to not donate to them and others should have the choice to donate to them.

The ones with religious backing are generally the shadiest of them all.
