Honest feedback: it feels quite static. (Stuck in a room talking.)

My advice would be to get out and see the city the player lives in.

This was the first episode I watched and it was incredibly well done. You've got a talent for this, looking forward to season 2. Cheers Mate!

Hi, this is the Last Call cinematographer/editor/co-producer here and thank you for your feedback. The filming schedule for Patrik’s episodes was super tight and we didn’t have ANY possibilities to scout any other locations, it was just very quick actions to this location and start shooting. Tbh, it was actually very close that these interviews with Patrik wouldn’t ever happen due to his schedule and traveling plans.

But I agree what you are saying and getting more time scouting locations on the next season!

i disagree with him. i watch these episodes because i am interested in the story of their backgrounds and anecdotes they tell about things that happen/ed behind the scenes. i dont watch it to see whatever place they hung around when they were 17 in their freetime., and i feel like they cannot go deep into the topics or focus when walking around outside being interviewed.
but yes, a good mix is always nice

and great work to all the team, fantastic production

Thank you for the feedback and the info.

That was the episode I was discussing and I did enjoy it.

I just felt visually there could be so much more done. (And I’m not trying to be negative.)

You go all the way to Monte Carlo, show it!

On the same track, you interview another poker player who happens to be from your home town. I’m from the uk, I’ve never been there. Let me see some more of it!

I agree with both of these comments. It's funny because 20%+ of the running time in the Patrik episodes is actually spent outside his office, but there are segments there (especially in ep 3) that always felt way too static to me.

I don't want to use time constraints as an excuse too much -- I mean yeah, like two weeks before we were in Monaco filming we still thought we'd be filming the entire S1 at the WSOP in Vegas with a completely different script / people, but it is what it is -- because honestly, when something feels too static there are always ways to fix it. With Patrik we did run out of time and basically had to choose between running around Monaco with him, which almost certainly would've downgraded the depth of the conversation by a lot, or sitting down with him at his office and downgrading on the visual side. Choosing between those two I think we made the right call, but looking forward I think we need to do a better job on the narrative side to keep things moving along a bit faster and avoid static scenes.

I think we actually did a much better job pacing-wise on ep #1, which is funny because that whole ep is *actually* spent indoors. The technique where we keep the interviewees separate works really well, and I have a narrative solution in mind for the future where I think we could have a similar approach to that, but still improve on the pacing even more.

What's really nice is that I think our format allows for doing episodes without forcing the same structure over and over again. On S2 I'd like to see us doing episodes with varying amounts of traveling/visual material -- if we have, say, Ziigmund on the show, I think it would be a crime to waste it by touring his favorite pizza places and talk about his favorite toppings. But if we are traveling in exotic country X for something poker related... let's show said country and tone down the poker a bit.

I think Ziigmund warrants an entire season.

Would definitely watch that.

The first season features the likes of Jens "Jeans89" Kyllönen, Patrik Antonius and Dara O'Kearney. The documentary follows Finnish rapper Uniikki's (the guy from this epic music video also starring Ziigmund) adventures in the poker world putting a major emphasis on the guests, which I think should be of huge interest to 2+2. The whole thing will be free to watch.

In case you've ever wondered how Jens climbed from freerolls to FTP nosebleeds in just two years, how much money Patrik Antonius has won lifetime, why Nordic players are so damn good at poker or just want to hear some Ziigmund stories, watch ahead

I'm one of the executive producers and the main screenwriter of the series, so yes this is a shameless ad, and yes you are welcome to roast me if you don't enjoy it

Trailer HERE (YouTube). English subtitles are available but you need to turn them on manually on YouTube (click the cogwheel icon).

The first episode, titled "Teenage Millionaire" where we tell Jens' story of becoming a millionaire overnight will be released in Finland on Nov 29th. English version will follow approximately 2-3 weeks later.
Is the English version available yet? Thanks chuck.

Lousy job, my friend...

Spoiler:

You missed one!

The patches are superstandard for any sponsored pro, imo. The book product placement was my idea. Whatever exposure we can give our guests' financial/sponsorship interests, I'm always happy to give. Sometimes it's the only way to get an interview done in the first place, and even if it wasn't, I like the idea of giving something in order to receive. The only question is if the placement here is a little too much -- if it is, that's 100% on me. Dara at no point requested to promote anything whatsoever, and I just thought it'd be nice to show his (excellent) books to the audience.

If the books were trash, I wouldn't have suggested or possibly even allowed that, but the fact is that they are pretty much the best poker strategy books published in forever. And since he serves as a coach-type guest here sort of mentoring Dan, why not visually highlight all the good stuff that he's done coaching others.

(FWIW, There was also a ~2-minute segment on the books that we ended up cutting from the episode for storytelling purposes.)

I know it's pretty whatever. I mean, even Patrik was plugging his company. Looking at all those patches and books just made me laugh and my guess is the revenue gained from doing this is neglible.

I'm looking forward to watching this, but not until Once a Gambler part 3 is out, so maybe never?!

Even Winds of Winter will be out before then, surely.

Fair.

***

The Last Call season finale is now available in English! To all of you subtitle haters out there: about 85% of the episode is actually spoken in English. As per usual, just press c or click the cog icon to have the rest subtitled.

The episode is featuring Dara O'Kearney and takes a deep dive into the world of ultra running. Before his poker career Dara used to compete in ultra marathons and 24-hour races around the world. What can poker players learn from those who have the mental and physical strength to run for 24 hours straight? Quite a lot, it turns out.

Do you plan to interview someone/people who hit rock bottom because of poker (addiction)? It would be a different but also interesting nonetheless

Just watched all 4 episodes and I love it. I don't agree with people complaining about the static episodes - it is true they are static but if you want to watch beautiful views and dynamic scenes, you should rather watch a Hollywood movie or a nature documentary. In my opinion there is no need to display beautiful scenery in a show already filled with interesting information which captivate the viewer's attention.

Thank you for the great work!
