In the US, its frowned upon to pay for interviews (but its completely standard in other countries). So no one in the US technically "pays" for interviews. They get around it by paying "licensing fees" when they use the person's pictures or videos. So any time during the interview you see their "childhood home" pictures, its for the licensing fee. Besides, its in Ellen's best interest to say the same statement that you posted above - the licensing fees are all done with a wink & a nod anyways.
The kid had EVERY news outlet out there banging on his door with offers that I'm sure must have been in the high six-figures, maybe higher; said kid makes *maybe* $15/hour??? Besides, if you really don't want to make any money, why go on Ellen? I'm sure MGM would have been happy to host a press conference, get his story out there and then it's done. One hour in a ballroom, free help from MGM PR and security, and you're done with it if you
really don't want any money from this.
It would be completely naive to think that he didn't get paid for the interview. Trust me, there's a whole PR machine of managers and agents working behind this kid right now.
