+1

He will eventually get to the bottom of this. Somewhere Russ Hamilton read that article and smiled blissfully unaware Sebok is hot on his trail with evidence to put him and others away for a long long time. Godspeed Joe.

In before converting all my AP/UB points to bottles of wine.

The scary thing is he has grossed 7 figures and probably was sponsored for most of the wins so his losses are covered. I guess a million isn't your father's million.......

"Unlike most other professionals in the sport, though, Sebok has other interests."

It's now general public knowledge that most pros live the bachelor frog lifestyle and have zero interests other than poker.

Does the existence of this article indicate that Sebok is (still?) paying a publicist?

Because given the choice between counting money and walking on grapes the obvious answer is walking on grapes.

Because of ummm... yeah.

To you guys thinking he's busto cause he's crushing grapes, ever figured he's trying to break into the business? Getting some hands on experience on how it all works?

He's got a huge twitter following, money, wealthy contacts etc.

inb4 Sebok 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon.

He's doing ok.. still has a few irons in the fire.

I looked up winery wages / salaries and these cellar rats don't make much in a small winery.. iirc it's like $15 to $30K a year. But if you advance and if it's a big winery, you can make way over $100K. Usually those people have a degree in... hmm.. can't remember.. one sec..
thanks for waiting.. Oenology.

If I were his career adviser, one plan might be to learn the biz from the ground up, stop partway, and change lanes into marketing.

sue them.. ?
no.. just reach a settlement. $3,000 seems fair. Ask for $6,000.

sorry.. i'm a little giddy about the 49ers win and packers loss..

Yes and no. Those who actually make the wines likely have such expertise. But many of the higher-ups in the industry come from business/management backgrounds.

My university has a huge viticulture & enology program -- in fact, I wouldn't at all be surprised if a few of our grads work alongside Sebok. (I've heard figures that two-thirds of the winemakers in California come from UC Davis, but I've never been able to confirm it.) I feel like more of the alums I've met in Napa Valley majored in agricultural/managerial economics and not V&E.

The wine guy with whom my department works most closely was a geography major here. He got into the marketing and sales side, and has been in the industry ever since... more than three decades.

Yeesh, good call. If he can get people into returning to UB after what it had done -- and I'm not talking about the casual newbs who didn't know any better -- he can market just about anything.

Ahh.. well, it looks like Joe went to Berekley..

This link might be well known...

9) What advice do you have for new players considering trying poker as a career?
Joe Sebok: don’t pigeonhole yourself. i went out and got my
education from berkeley, i have a degree. i worked for awhile i did a lot
of business things. so for me even if the poker avenue doesn’t work out
and i can’t sustain myself, i’m always going to have something to go back
to. it kind of scares me i get a lot of emails from a lot of kids that are
19 20 and want to know they can do to make money and get in poker and win
right now. but the fact of the matter is they shouldn’t focus on that they
should be excited to be here. they should focus on other avenues so if they
don’t make it they have something to fall back on.

A true clown. Every word he utters drips with phoniness. From word one it was clear he was going to do absolutely nothing with Ultimate Bet and then try to make some verbose resignation as to why it didn't work out. There are leeches like this in every industry, people who try to teach/manage because they can not do, even though they can't even teach/manage.

Tried to play poker, failed. Tried to start a Web site, failed. Tried to spearhead a doomed reclamation project in return for some Judas money, failed.

I've often gone back and forth in my own decision to produce educational videos and the like because the industry is filled to the brim with half-wits moonlighting as prodigies. You are guilty by association and it makes me sick. Like when you tell your relatives you play poker for a living they think of Phil Hellmuth, Jamie Gold, and their pocket aces getting cracked. So often I just want to escape into anonymity, make my money and leave it at that. Reading the forums a couple of times a week (the most I can stomach) all I see is people cheating, thieving, misrepresenting, lying and scheming. It makes you wonder if there are any good people left.

There are a few good people left but they are not enough to overcome the damage of the Joe Sebok's of the world.

Which is why this country and the rest of the world is circling the toilet bowl.

Lying and cheating is the norm for Wall Street, congress, corporate America and the rest of the so called 'leadership'.

The Chi-coms have all the money and soon to be power to rule the world.

Hopefully the Almighty will strike down this modern day Sodom and Gomorrah quickly, but will wait until after I score a huge win at the craps table.

It's a shame BG lost his home. The guy donated millions he won to charity and then fell on some tough poker times. The money he made from pokerstars he should have paid off his home. DN would be in the same situation if not for Poker Stars $$ Hellmuth too if not for his wifes income. Sebok tried to do some good but his ego got in the way as it does with many.

The first sentence calling Joe Sebok a superstar is incredibly disturbing. There is no way that dead money was ever a winning player if you deduct his entry fees from his tournament winnings.
