Pretty good idea if it's real, I don't see how anybody could tell unless they had read about it

Interesting technology, but not very impressive. You need to have a specific phone (software not enough) and one specific deck of marked cards. But sure, in middle to high stakes home games with unregular participants it would probably work really well as long as the cheater(s) managed to convince the rest of the table to use the cheating deck of cards and not any other deck.

Cheaters could have a stockpile of marked "unopened sealed" decks to switch in.

yuck.

Seems scary to think that sophisticated level of cheating at Live Poker is out there.

couple thoughts;

- seems the cheater would have to constantly re-position the camera in a full ring game to see specific opponents cards. would this not become obvious ?

-makes me agree w/most B&M Room Policy that ALL ELECTRONIC DEVISES not be touched while in a hand.......so in any high stakes Home Game, unless I went to high school w/the host & other players, I'd request all devices OFF THE TABLE.

Perhaps B&M rooms should move to an "off the table" policy ?

Seems hard to judge how dangerous it is without seeing it in use on an actual poker table. Do infrared cameras work any differently than regular cameras? Does the camera have to have a full & clear view of the cards or not?

If this has to be the case, the cheater has to be really subtle and patient with the device or he'll get caught fast. Still, in HS contexts where 100k+ pots happen this can probably be used once or tweice during a night and the cheater can win massive money.

Also imo it is crazy that people took the time to develop this for commercialization and how professional it seems (or at least the experts in the vid agree it looks really professional). Either the cheating market is a lot bigger than we see/think, or the devs are really wasting their potential.

While the technology is impressive/scary, this has always been the part that seemed super clunky. The cheating camera is like the size of a big car-key fob. It's not clear at what distance it works, but it seems conspicuous AF:

The threads I've read in the past about scams like this have always involved a dealer who's also in on it, since the deck would need to be positioned just right for this to work. Of course the tech will get better and I imagine will be close to perfect/undetectable in 5 years time.

This is very real was caught in Texas home games a couple of years ago. Only difference was the a person was wearing headphones most of the time was a IPhone being used with earbuds. When the cards were dealt the scanner read the bar code in the cards and told the person what seat was going to win the hand. Not that exact hand but what seat would hold the winning hand. They would signal accordingly and switch seats if a proper read of the cards was not happening. Everything effects the ability of the scanner to read the cards from the table being level to position when dealt. So yes the dealer has to be in on scam. But being a player who got scammed by this I had no clue other than the tightest players in the game all of sudden just stacking 1000 off with 3 4 offsuit preflop saying they just had a feeling. Now this also was 2 years ago long before I ever saw this article.

This is interesting, and quite concerning that there are people making money off this.

I wake up to a new follower on twitter (howtomarkcards) that links to their website.

I don't want to post their site directly, because I don't want to give them traffic. But they followed me on twitter and it seems their website is dedicated to teaching people how to mark cards via infrared ink and sunglasses or even contacts, and selling the equipment to do to.

There are even videos on youtube... I was wondering if people knew this was out there (for home games as well, as they sell entire marked decks), as well as the increased possibility in cheating.

It makes me never want to play home games again. They sell big brand decks that have every cad pre-marked. With contacts you can even ban sunglasses and it wouldn't solve the problem.

If you want to be safe, get those glasses and check the cards before playing. If they are marked you can decide whether you want to be in on the scam or out the cheater

I think it would be easy for the floor to see if people are marking cards. Floor buys a pair of these glasses, if they see cards light up they look at people's fingers. If they see ink all over a person's fingers, press chargers against them.

Yeah, these have been around for a surprisingly long time - feel like I first saw them described here at least 3+ yrs ago, but the overseas manufacturer/tech made people naturally suspicious, and with a super-high price tag I'm sure a lot of people balked at the idea of sending $5K+ to some Chinese company via Western Union. It's prob not a good thing for the game that these are getting more mainstream attention now as surprisingly effective.

Never seen such a person so desperate for attention and to be recognized. His stories became stale.

They aren't that expensive though. If someone cheats me out of $5000 or $20, they are still stealing money from me. We don't have no-limit cash here so we only have home games for a decent no limit $1/2 or better.

There's some guys around here that would probably pay that much just to use it in a $10 SNG if they could make their buddies look like idiots on a regular basis.

Dont forget dealers cut cards. From my experience when a dealer cuts a deck his fingers stay on contact with the deck. He then simultaneously picks up the deck and starts dealing.

For this to work the dealer would have to cut the deck, completely remove this fingers from the front facing of the deck allowing the camera to record the markings.

Be tough not to notice.

obviously the dealer would have to be in on it. there are also redundant markings on the card that may bet around the dealers finger block. my one question is will the dealer have to cut the deck away from the reader and turn it towards the camera after the deck is set.

you def dont want the device to start reading and then cut the deck
