He almost got me as well. I lent him 4k the first time I ever met him in Montreal after he had bought 10% of me in the WPT. He told me he'd pay me the next day and that he wanted to play PLO... he didn't pay the next day. I figured he was just being a lazy poker player, so whatever. It came down to the day I was supposed to fly back to Toronto and I still hadn't heard from him. So I texted him and he kept randomly asking when my flight was leaving, and telling me that I could just go home and he'd etransfer me. The guy had won the Sunday Million and the LAPT, so most people probably trusted him... like I did to lend him the 4k in the first place. Anyways, it felt too strange to me, so I told him I wasnt getting on my plane until I got my money. So I drove back to Playground (the casino) and confronted him. He went and talked to someone and came back with my money.

Like Im sure he did with many people, he would try to sell me action after that to other people's tournament packages and say that he was getting a lower markup because he was buying up all the equity they were selling. But a lot of times it would be to guys playing stuff in like Brazil where its hard to find updates. And he'd ask me not to contact the player and that if I had any questions I should just speak directly with him.

I got lucky because I was more aggressive with him and was in a position to actually be standing in front him. But unfortunately most people didnt deal with him face to face all the time. Im betting quiet and passive individuals probably got screwed the hardest and for the largest amounts.

Looking back now it seems stupid to lend someone money that you dont know, but he was friends with a ton of people in the community, and he had some decent scores under his belt, so he was the last guy you'd think was going to screw you. It confused me though because I played both 5/10 with him and at WPTDS in Calgary and thought he was a terrible player in both formats.
Good post but just one flaw, he wasn't friends with anyone in the community he was just a professional name dropper.

It's to bad that when someone asks you not to talk to the player or look for updates on him when you are buying that persons action doesn't send red flags to most poker players. I wonder if most poker players are suckers for pyramid schemes too.

The dude was operating a ponzi scheme, basically, so the fact that so many people fell for it seems to answer your last question.

That's not totally true. He was staying with Jon Borenstein when I came to Calgary, in fact, Jon and I got off our flights at the same time and Shak facilitated us taking a cab together from the airport to the casino. Jon was sharing a room with him. I know Jon isn't friends with him now, but there were a lot of reputable players that had faith in him. He made a point of making a lot of friends.

Any news of him @ WSOP? Wondering the odds of 1) him finding another backer and 2) being able to blend in with the thousands of people there without someone recognizing him (Considering in reality not a ton of people know him, moreso just the alberta community and some ept grinders?)

Shak certainly wouldn't blend into a crowd. He is a recognisable guy who is incapable of keeping his mouth shut. I can't imagine anyone would lend him 5 bucks much less stake him for thousands of dollars in tournament buyins.

Update is basically Shak has disappeared and no money has been repaid. I still don't even know whether he scammed me with phantom bullets and have moved on but it really sucks for everyone he owes money to. Hopefully he pays it back one day, but it looks unlikely

well, not really relevant to everyone getting scammed, awful stuff obv and cant believe he did it. but during ept prague we stayed together. during like day 3 of the main or something i was walking back to the tourney room after a break. i saw someone walking about 20 yards in front of me who was definitely shak. same build, wearing sweatpants/hoody/hat. so ipicked up speed and when i got close enough i slapped him on the ass pretty hard, like too hard for sure.

then the dude turns around and it was someone i had never seen in my life. i played it off and told him glglgl in the tourney, was mortified and felt awful but it was funny nonetheless.

point being, shak can kinda almost blend into some crowds. feel awful for all the people robbed fwiw, he got me for a little bit, chalk it up to me being too nice (naive) as usual when i get stolen from

I guess all the losses are written off at this point? Anyone in Lethbridge seen shak at the casino? I didn't before I moved but I've seen him in several pics at different clubs/bars from friends who have met him as well so it's not like he is really hiding.

It was written off the minute they transferred him funds. All this is just another lesson learned on X person is scammer don't blindly hand money over to someone you don't know.

Still in lethbridge since guy posted above back in july of seeing him^^

I see lots of pics of him out partying on FB / snapchat

I asked in the fb group maybe a month ago what ever happened and why people gave up chasing him and someone mentioned they heard a legal agreement where his dad paid off some of his bigger debts but no idea if that has any merit / could have been someone talking out of their ass :P

Spotted Shak this morning at the new Copperwood Tim Horton's in his home town of Lethbridge, Alberta. He was sitting in a booth with a small dude. They left and walked towards the Copperwood Subdivision. Does that mean he is living in Copperwood? Probably. It was 8AM.
He hasn't changed his looks at all. Still a completely fat slob dressed in his typical Air Jordan sweat pants.

People who presumably come from aggressive cultures only respect aggression.

Good for you.
