How about you go back and read the whole 3 pages of the thread and maybe it will make some sense to you.

FWIW Josem, (who used to work for Stars) suggested this might not be the case. (post 46)

Both are still impressive cases of entrepreneurship, though. No doubt about it.

By the way, I saw an article a little while back about how staying private got trendy a few times in recent years: once around the dot-com bubble, and another right before the financial crisis of 2008. In almost any other time, the words "going public" was pretty much synonymous with "we made it." This article came out well before the whole WeWork thing – probably around the time of Facebook's IPO. (Too lazy to look for it.)

Thus, I often wonder if PokerStars' staying private was a result of timing. The first major rumblings of a possible IPO took place in mid-2006 – right before the UIGEA. Others could probably weigh in on that, though.

Either way, I'm curious to see what is entailed in the "agreement in principle" that Olga Zverovich mentioned. I like what Josem said in that Tweet about Scheinberg being exonerated. Fingers crossed.
Stars was doing road shows to take a portion public at the time UIGEA was passed. (Party had already done so.)

Interestingly, being private made it easier for them to continue in the US market post UIGEA ..... right up to Black Friday.

But to this day, the way Isai Scheinberg's PokerStars completely dropped the ball on the U.S. lobbying front (mainly with misguided rhetoric and financing a "player advocacy" group that actively sought to solicit, control, and freeload off of goodwill) burned important bridges that U.S. online poker is still paying for politically today.

And that's not counting how upset rival companies (at least those that have yet to be absorbed?) remain about the marketing advantage PokerStars obtained by staying in the U.S. after the UIGEA. Or the legitimate "heat" that PokerStars' pre-BF "push" to gain entrance into the entire U.S. market brought -- commercially and regulatory.

.... There are many people involved in the regulated online casino/online sports betting industry today who owe much of the opportunity they have now to the experience they gained from the offshore U.S. online poker business before Black Friday.

Sorry, David. I was pretty active in the online poker industry and kept a front row seat throughout the lobbying on the proposed federal legislation regarding online poker. Much of your narrative is simply mistaken and leaves out key interests lobbying to secure for themselves a monopoly in the US market(s), while sticking a knife in existing online providers.

The misguided DC lobbying under-written by Full Tilt and Stars sought a Federal Solution; that was a fools errand but did not render offering or playing online poker illegal federally. (It's still not. absent some clearly written state law prohibition.)

Stars had cut a deal with Wynn, FullTilt had cut a deal with MGM, if I recall correctly, Caesars was looking at a future where its competitors had signed up the largest potential partners, with ACTUAL experience

Party cut and ran post-UIGEA, Party's newly hired CEO eventually going to Caesars, (where he brilliantly saved Caesars from bankruptcy in my opinion, chosing a strategy as a profitable buyer/seller of social gaming operations like Playtika, rather than a quixotic developer of a "legalized" US facing online poker market). Stars built the US market post-UIGEA, including the value of the WSOP brand.

If you want villlains post UIGEA, ask yourself who reportedly expended a lot of effort to drive Stars from various US states, in order to grab the perceived markets for itself ? How come there are only 3 States with expressly legal, licensed online poker offerings Don't blame the clust**f*ck that was post IUGEA legalization lobbying on Stars.

Ask yourself why doesn't California have licensed online poker ?

Thanks for the informed input, Gzesh.

To answer your question, the coverage I kept up with pointed to tribal gaming interests led by a coalition including Pechanga that made legalization such an impossibility in CA. There's separate coverage that also points to WSOP/Caesars' efforts to battle and block PokerStars (I think Barry G. alluded to this in one of his podcast convos with Joey), plus Sheldon Adelson's ceaseless public opposition to online poker/casino.

As you're aware, the 2016 CA online poker "push" became a mess of its own and ended abruptly.

To be clear, I now think:
-at the time of his arrest in Switzerland, there was no plea deal

-at some time before his guilty plea, there was a plea deal

At the time, on the basis of what I read from public info, I thought there was no specific deal agreed prior to Isai travelling to the US. They might have had an outline of an agreement, they might have had nothing, they might have had it all sewn up, I don't know. My perception at that time based on my limited info was that Isai was going to fight it.

There is virtually no chance he's facing anything more than a slap on the wrist and at his age there's no doubt that the outcome wasn't pre determined, either on the books or not.
Look at David Bazov... he got the special treatment off the record, and to top it off the pos has the audacity to sue the Canadian government for a few more million due his name being besmirched.
If that pos is walking freely Isai deserves an international airport named after him.

Actually, the IOM airport is pretty good, for its size. Decent waiting area, with good seats and alcoholic refreshments iirc.

Unfortunately, it is closed today due to a coronavidrus ban on travel to the IOM.

Sect7G is correct. Naming the IoM airport after Isai would be amazing. I mean, who's "Ronaldsway" anyhow?

They've got a big, cool statue of John at John Lennon International Airport in Liverpool ("Above us, only sky"). Maybe a statue of Isai, wearing a diamond-pattern sweater vest, with his dog, Pyr?

I'd go for the unveiling ceremony of that.

When you see who's walking free and who is in positions of power around the world, yes, we should be naming airports and first-borns after Isai Scheinberg.

But probably no worries b/c rumor has it that many non-violent felons (especially over the age of 60-65?) are being released from prisons around the country due to this world wide pandemic going on and all.

A great outcome for the man that built and saved online poker.

He can now (finally) get inducted into the Poker HoF and even play at the WSOP.
