Actually, the stiffness wasn't really the paper but how the glue was applied. We were having problems with people in book stores, particularly Borders, who would take one of our books off the shelf and then look at it. But when they were done, the book would often be shoved back on the shelf when it was still partly opened and it would get damaged. Once this happened, the book would be sent back to us as a book return where we would not only lose the printing cost of the book but would have to pay for shipping as well. So, we went to our printer and told them we needed our books to quickly snap shut to avoid this problem. The fix worked, but we did get complaints about our books being too stiff.
Best wishes,
Mason
