1) Because the people at First Baptist Church of Hurst vote and most poker players don't.

2) Cops like to be on TV.

3) They plan on using the RICCO statute to keep the money for The City of Hurst General Fund.

4) They can't find enough drug dealers to arrest to justify there budget.

5) This news coverage will really impress the City Council members who attend First Baptist Church.

GD BS!!!!!!!

This **** makes me so effing mad, what a waste of time for the police.

I live in Dallas and decided I needed some live practice before the main event in 06’, so I went to a game held in an old warehouse. A little leery about safety because I had heard these games were getting robbed, I only brought my car door key, driver’s license and an extra $20 over the buy in.

About 3 hours in, I notice some people walking around that didn't seem in place. They looked like an average suburban couple that just happened upon a big poker game (Like they were Vegas!), but they weren’t playing, just walking around observing everything. There were two couples doing this and after a while I forgot about it and went back to bleeding chips.

Then, I heard a BOOM! and saw guys in black and carrying huge guns yelling “Down! Down!, Down!”

I’m thinking “holy ****, the one private game I attend gets robbed by psychos with machine guns”

As I was able to focus on them a little closer, I was relieved when I saw Dallas Swat written in yellow across each one of their chests. Along with the swat team was the crew from A&E’s Dallas Swat TV show. Now I went from relieved to pissed because this was obviously a contrived raid for the benefit of the show. The four people I had noticed were now in Vice Squad rain jackets, walking around giving tickets and arrested people (including the old lady who was there to make a few extra bucks selling food).

Everyone at my table was nervous as a whore in church, but knowing all they could do is give us a ticket, I started yucking it up with the swat guys, the crew from A&E and the pretty blond vice cop. The A&E crew tried to get us to sign releases and I said hell no, not because I care that anyone knows that I play poker but because I knew the production company couldn’t be trusted to not present the game and the players in ignorance like the video newscast that started this thread.

I guess I wasn’t the only one that didn’t sign the release because I never saw this air on Dallas Swat. I was kind of bummed about that because I thought it would have been fun to watch. The crew camped out our table and had the cameras focused on us the whole time and said we would be prominent in the episode. I was looking forward to getting some blurry face time.

Anyway, here’s a run down of the MO of some of the big, bad, evil poker players that I met. There was a grandma, an attorney, a single mother, a guy that owned a fence company, a CPA, a consultant and several other people that owned their own businesses. All in all, it was just a bunch of good folks looking to have some fun on a Saturday night. No one was drunk, rowdy or out of control.

There’s plenty of crime in Dallas that the swat team could spend their time focusing on (and I should know, I got stabbed at a freaking Jack in the Box drive thru). Seeing the total waste of resources for raids like this just infuriates me to no end.. Not at the Swat team and various police officers, they are just doing what they are told, but at the stupid laws and chief of police that authorizes these things. This was a place that had games going every night,. The owner was sending emails almost daily and he could have easily been shut down with a couple of police officers when a game wasn’t running without putting anyone at risk. I’m sorry, but anytime you have a dozen guys with guns at the ready, bad things can happen.

I sure hope that one day this archaic law gets overturned so harmless folks can go have a little fun without worrying about getting harassed by the cops.

Sounds like the raid at "Aces". Was in the tourney and busted with QQ vs.JJ before they showed up. Best bad beat I ever had.
