Hypothetical UB cheating question: any suicides? Hypothetical UB cheating question: any suicides?

Im not asking this to be morbid. Its just i've seen it mentioned before, maybe in jest, but in an online poker news magazine (giving credit?) that its a possibility.....Players who went rags to riches and then back to rags again dissapearing off the net never to be heard from again, could have been victims of suicide... By sheer numbers, understanding of math and the nosebleeds that players play at I cant imagine this opinion could be disproven....

So my question is this, is there ANY way to figure out if any cheated players may have killed themselves? Morbid yes, but think about it, if it was true, we would have a hard time figuring something like that out on the sheer anonymity factor of the net alone.....

Heres why....Someone gets cheated, someone kills self, cheater is a murderer? Could cheaters be charged with a much different crime here? there has to be a big pool of peeps cheated in there......

Suppose hypothetically they'd only signed up to the site because of a well-known poker celebrity endorsing it. What then?

Suppose that celebrity player only struck an endorsement deal because his parents played for play chips on UB.

And suppose those parents only opened a playchip account there because a distant friend suggested it.

And suppose that distant friend was the mother of the OP, who got started via a link found on his laptop.

Ban the would be murderer imo.

Murder? Of course not, don't be silly. Fraud? Absolutely. By definition suicide is when a person takes their OWN life. To apply your logic to it would have the police arresting 17 year old girls for murder after they broke up with their boyfriend and he offed himself.

okay i get it, you two arent interested....i just thought because of the numbers involved and the sheer cut-throat aspect of felting player after player without even giving em a drink or a dance. I just think the consequences of their actions should be thought of in more than just monetary ways, they impacted hundreds of lives at our bottom line where it hurst most.......

lol what if at the very least their hooker they used had like the clap or something, shouldnt Russ have to buy some pennicillin?

Oh and have you not heard of the kid who killed herself after her friends mom opened a MYspace acct and belittled her and harassed her until the teenager killed herself? Well that mom is charged with Murder, so in my scenario cheaters could be too....

Something that's really impressive about the cheating scandal is those few people who were refunded low to mid 6 figures and are still playing high stakes professionally to this day. I'm assuming they were running the course of building their bankroll at the time the cheating occurred, but they managed to basically get a few hundred k stolen from them, and still able to win enough in other games at the time to not have the stolen amount critically stunt their progress. That is quite a feat imo.

I watched a Law & Order SVU that was similar that got the story line from this case. I thought it was absurd that the parent was charged in the television show (Yes, I know it's not real) and hoped that at the time that this wasn't based on a true story. If that was true, I'd hope that a person wouldn't be charged. That is not to say what the defendant did wasn't wrong, but there' s point that a person must be held accountable for their own actions.

In response to the OP, I understand the point that you're making, but I would hope that it wouldn't stand in court. As for myself, I was hoping that I wouldn't receive a refund. If I was to know that I was cheated, I believe it would have lead to terrible psychologically consequences after the fact. I haven't played much on UB, but it was the site that I played for 6 months when I first began playing for real money many years ago for stakes up to 2/4. Yada, yada, yada...

I hope that those that committed this fraud realize that they not only stole money, but they also destroyed the lives of many persons mentally and psychologically. I can only relate it to those that have cheated me out of money in the past. The emotional turmoil that I went through caused a lot of damage. I hope that a few of them live meaningless and miserable lives. I tried to help them and they blatantly stole from me and could care less. RH and others did the same and at a much larger scale. They should rot in hell and that's just a start.

we're talking about millions upon millions of dollars, & people KNOW who was responsible. How is this guy not in, at the very least, critical condition in hospital? My god, i know people who would do unspeakable things for a carton of beer FFS. Is he in hiding forever from anyone who may ever recognize him?

Total and utter fail.

Glimmertwin's top tip for today: when you cite articles in support of your argument, do be sure to read them first.

Nope. The cheater did not possess the requisite mens rea for a homicide. It's not negligent or reckless homicide. The felony murder rule doesn't apply unless the guy killed himself while being cheated and even then it's just an amazingly large ridiculous stretch and would never be taken seriously.

If you cheat someone at poker and later they kill themself due to their financial status the cheater has no culpability for murder. He may be culpable for fraud, theft, or whatever else though.
