Anyway if these guys were tough guys they wouldn’t give a **** about garret and if they were really tough they would either tell him to stfu or rob him for complaining. They were probably not organized crime or tough guys as he blackmailed them successfully , even though they were doing something illegal.
Seriously.
I don't understand how people can even have thoughts like, "I bet it was a violent, organized crime outfit and Garrett was too afraid to expose them. But he wasn't afraid to
threaten to expose them in a private meeting. And even though they would have offed him had he exposed them, when he merely threatened to do so, they politely refunded his money on an installment plan."
This is ridiculous in itself. But on top of that, if you went around telling everyone they were cheating, it would become riskier for them to harm you. If you have a private meeting with one guy and threaten them, it's less risky for them to harm you.
Lastly, while I have very limited knowledge of big home games, I don't know of much reason to think they are commonly run by violent gangs, though I'm sure that occurs. I've played in a game run by really scary guys in a 3rd world country, but even there, the majority of the games were run by groups like, a club for car enthusiasts.
Garrett makes no mention of organized crime or being intimidated, even though that would be to his benefit.
The simplest explanation is that the story happened as he tells it himself. He sold out his fellow players, allowing them to be cheated in exchange for his own financial gain.
He probably lacks the insight to understand how the story makes him look, but he is the one telling it.
If someone freely and openly tells a negative story about themselves, there's no need to invent some wild scenario involving the mafia to make them the good guy.
