HPT posts that they are about $70,000 short of hitting their guarantee..........

shortly after one of their prop players starts tweeting that you can get in to the event for half price..........

That has to be incredibly illegal.

This is giving me deja vu. Pretty sure something very similar happened before, in which a tournament organizer last-minute staked players to meet a gtd and chaos ensued.

By the way, there was quite a bit of grumbling yesterday about the fact that this event had a fake guarantee. The fine print states the prize pool is not guaranteed if they get fewer than 300 entrants.

EDIT: found it: https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/2...erlay-1523046/

Good job taking screenshots. Trooper has deleted those tweets.

Played this today , what is this f***ery? Sigh. I just wish there was some accountability but unfortunately this will change nothing. Haven't played a pokerstars event in over a year, looks like going to add HPT to that list.

"these are Matusow's boys"

Isn't that what the table said when Antonio Esfandiari pulled down Matusow's shorts at the WSOP?

They also charged the highest rake ever in Vegas for a $1500 buyin event.

$1440+210.

from darren rabbi twitter:

HPT staff were coaching each other on “official statement” that Westgate selected people and hpt has 0 to do with it (and that they were instructed not to say anything else)

Same sort of thing happened to me at Peppermill Reno during a Satty for the Poker Night In America .

Was playing in a cash game and Tourney was being held Upstairs. Tourney director comes into main poker room and asks if anybody is interested in a single table satty . We get enough to fill a table but its winner take all for the seat . I win the seat and head upstairs . Next thing I see is 2nd and 3rd place from single table satty being seated .

I asked guy I beat h/u if he decided to just buy in ? He says nope TD gave him and the girl who finished 3rd free entry. I go ****ing bonkers and get NGC rep involved . Takes about 30 minutes of talking but They eventually brought me my entry fee back from Single table satty . In the end the three of us played tourney for free.

No clue what these guys are trying to do sometimes. Instead of a one winner paid in full entry he tries to slide in 2 others for nothing ? How was that going to work?

Anyways this is a bunch of bull if it happened .

Thats a pretty crappy way of handling a poker tournament.

If the place wants to offer a guarantee of some form which is a risk to them, then buy insurance against it if they really dont want to be on the hook for it.

The Trooper getting involved is super shady, esp the way he handled inquiries into it. He's greased up with the westgate too i guess.

I guess it goes to show in poker, there's more shade than what's in an etch and sketch.

I am not sure if the Westgate did anything illegal here. They can use their money how they chose too, it sucks if you don't get chosen to get half your entry paid.

Don't you think their should be some prerequisites though? I could understand if they want to give seats away to VIP players or have a drawing before a tournament begins but to discount seats 50% last minute when it's pretty obvious the guarantee isn't going to be met is a scummy move.

This wasn't about not getting chosen, players who already entered never had a chance to get a discounted seat. I don't know the players who were chosen but from TheTrooper's tweet, it sounded like a free-for-all. How did the casino decide who gets 50% off and who doesn't?

I don’t think it’s different than using promo money to put in your employees for free. Which is something that’s apparently perfectly legal.

Having somebody tweet about it is so ridiculously stupid that I honestly can’t believe organizers knew about it. At least nobody up the food chain where you need a high school diploma.

Even if something is legal that doesn't mean it isn't shady and/or unethical.

This happened about 8 yrs ago at Harrahs Chester outside of Philly. The event was a saturday 100k gtd. Buy-in was either $400 or $500. They were short by 25k-30k. To make the GTD they made an announcement in the cash area asking for anyone who wanted to play in the tourney, they would put you in. They were taking money out of the BADBEAT jackpot. Once players found out how the NEW players were getting in for FREE, there was outrage. The tourney was stopped till the situation was corrected. Shameful for any venue to do this.

Of course it is. But by now we all now that a lot of organizers/venues don’t care one iota about that.

I remember the outrage when the first tournament pulled the ‘$xxx guaranteed*’ (* if estimated number of xxx participants is reached). By now, everybody is just thinking oh well, another one of these.

That’s 13+% rake... for an HPT event???

Who the hell do they think they are? PokerStars?

Westgate just keeps piling up the reasons to never play there.
