For anyone interested, here are a couple of pictures I took earlier today. You can see the temporary signs they have up right now.

Actually it really doesnt look shady at all, just empty.

I wouldnt think a ESPN radio station would let their name be used with a shady enterprise...could be way off, dude could be using it w/out their knowledge?

They just put up a temporary sign about two weeks ago, that's when I first noticed it. The building they're in is directly across the street from a fire station and has never had many businesses in it. Also, there is a Security company in the building next to that strip mall (Top Gun Security). The security parking lot is a common place you'll find cops sitting and clocking people late at night - especially cause the bar is right there. Also, this is close to the lake so there is a stream that runs in the back of this strip mall. You can really only access it from the front. Scout bar is also in their building and that bar has been there for a while. That bar also fills the parking lot anytime a decent band is there (they get a variety of bands/artists there). I could see parking being an issue on some days. There used to be a tattoo shop next to the bar but that went out a few months back. Aside from those 2 businesses the upstairs suites have been empty for years now ever since before I moved over here.

My guess is that the strip mall they're in was recently acquired by a new property company, or the current property company is under new management. They've been doing allot of updates around the strip mall for the last month or two and they're actually giving it a much needed makeover. I'm guessing the new company (or management) is wanting to fill spots since they've been empty for so long. Mint actually may have scored a good deal on their space. I noticed a new pool supply store bought 2 or 3 units further down the strip mall that were also previously vacant a month or two back. Keep in mind, this strip mall is pretty long. The building Mint and Scout bar are in is actually separate from the normal strip mall stores that you would expect to see. There is a long strip mall, then it breaks off to another building where Mint and the Bar are. Both are owned by the same property company and both have been getting make-overs.

Last week they posted a job offering on Facebook looking for dealers. Their website (even if you visit now) says they are looking for experienced dealers and to send them your resume. But, their FB job fair post said no experience required (paying $15-$17/hr). The job fair was last Thursday for potential dealers. I drove past about 30 minutes after they were suppose to start and saw a dozen or so vehicles in the parking lot. Looks like they had some people show up, but I don't think it would be anywhere close what they would need to fill the 20 tables they advertised on their site.

They were also offering free 30-day memberships if you joined their mailing list. I joined and received an email Saturday morning stating they were having a "home game" at the location later in the evening ($1/$3 NL $200 buy-in). I wanted to get over there to see the location inside but already had plans and couldn't go.

As of today they are suppose to open April 28th according to their site. There is definitely activity in the spot and I would imagine they're permanent sign will be up very soon. Games appear to be getting started so I would expect this room will be open for action on the date listed now. I'll post updates as I see more..

One other interesting thing I forgot to mention - If you visit their website now you'll notice they have a big sign saying ESPN radio 97.5 is the official radio station of Mint Poker. Does anyone listen to ESPN radio here in Houston? I listen often and have never heard the room advertised. But, there is a guy on there who has his own show called "The Blitz." His name is Fred Faour and he's written poker books in the past (he's also been successful with horse betting). I wonder if there could be ANY type of correlation here? I'm not saying there is and I have ZERO proof there is (so please nobody quote me on this)..But it is kind of interesting... They are now stating they are the official poker of the ESPN radio station, and there is a pretty legit poker guy who has his own show on that radio station. Maybe someone here knows Fred Faour?
long time lurker on the forum but registered so I can confirmed I did hear Fred advertise Mint on his show 2 weeks ago, so yes Mint has an ad spot on ESPN. He mentioned he has a membership there and would be playing sometimes.

Backside of the center is a bayou/creek...so what you are seeing in that pic is likely one of the trees between the building and the creek.

I've been to a number of shows at the Scout Bar but never ventured to the end that Mint is claiming to be setting up shop. As a result, I cannot tell you just how much space there is on that end from the walk-through to the creek/bayou.

Line markings are solid.

This is not what comes to mind when you think of a public poker club. Particularly in a state, where to my knowledge, no other exists.

There is a big difference in asserting a station as the 'official station' of XYZ business and the station reflecting they are the primary sponsor of XYZ business (or in this case, Mint Poker is the poker home for ESPN 97.5). When I have a pool party, I can claim that any station is the 'official station' of my party simply because that might be the station I chose to play. Does not mean the station knew who I was or condoned any of the activity taking place during the party...
Well, you could say that, but I imagine if they found out and cared, they'd be able to have you stopped through legal means. That said, announcing that "ESPN radio 97.5 is the official radio station of Mint Poker" could just be the result of a simple advertising arrangement.

A few public poker rooms do now exist in Texas. That thread can be found here: https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/29...texas-1518035/

The parking space lines are bright and aolid. The place was just painted, the reason the awnings are missing is because they're getting replaced.or waiting for tenants and the name will be put on thwm.
I get why people are wary because of the owner but trying to equate a typical 2 story building with a crack house is stupid.

+1 for this. Anyone thinking a poker room in Texas is going to look like the Ritz is crazy. Not to mention, I don't think this will be a room with lots of "high rollers" coming through. For the types of games that will likely be played here on a daily basis (I'm guessing 1/3NL and 2/5NL) I think it's a pretty solid location.

I could agree with everyone here about being wary of the owner. While I'm still thinking about playing some because it's so close to me, I don't think I would play anything but a cash game or something where I was getting paid before I leave. Which does kinda suck.. They were advertising WSOP and WPT satellites on their website which I was really excited to play in. But, after reading the stories from other people on this board the last thing I'm going to do is play anything which involves getting a "voucher" or needing to wait for money/tickets..etc.

re: HOUSTON new "poker club" Mint Poker, RUN BY SCAMMER? Michael Eackman

the question is...when you register at the desk...if they operate like any other seat rate place in tx...they will clock you in..and charge your debit/credit card when you leave...if you leave without notice - they will dock you the whole time till closing (this is what the austin games do)

Now - do you trust this guy with your credit card info???? that's your choice but me personally...im bringing a marker to check the bills he gives me and there is no way I am going to give him my credit card info

A wise post. This is probably a good strat regardless of the owner's history. Plenty of sketchy people (and just plain incompetence) in the poker industry. Looking back on UB/FTP, it's mind-blowing how trustworthy we were in parking thousands of dollars overseas with unregulated strangers. But, hey, no one ever thought UB players would get paid so I suppose even Michael Eakman might pay the $10k he owes me someday. I've made many attempts to reach him over the past few years to no avail, so if anyone plans on playing at his club, shoot me a PM - would be great so have a contact or two in Houston.

My initial reaction was excitement. Finally a California style poker room coming to Houston.

At first I thought they were already opened. So I visited google maps to see what their facility looked like from the exterior.

This was my first clue to something was off. The floor plans and photos they have listed on their above website do not match at all to any buildings google maps is showing for their listed address.

After googling the Owners name Michael Eakman, I was immediatley pointed towards a very old 2p2 thread listed here.

Michael Eakman scam thread by user bigruk (LINK)

So after a lot of reading I found several websites that stat Michael Eakman is a known scammer and owes people 5k on average.

Their website for Mint poker is selling seats and monthly memberships via a well done phone number and decently designed website.

My concern is they are just pocketing peoples money and have no intention of opening.

Their biggest brag on their website is being Texas's first registered "casino" their words.

Mind if you if this place opens and looks how they say it will look, I will be there as long as they are paying out immediately.

But I am also very nervous for a lot of people.
I was just there yesterday and everything is on the up and up. They have building permits and Webster PD is aware and some officers are going to be providing security. Opening date is May 11, 2017 and from the look of the construction there is more than enough time to finish. I am in no way associated with the club.

There is 4,000 square feet. Certainly enough room for at least 10 tables

Not a "public" club as memberships are required so it is a "private club"

People in Texas are trying to get legal poker going. Stop hating losers. Give them a chance. Paid membership club is an interesting model and is potentially way better financially for the player compared to rake.

I don't think people are hating on the idea and efforts to get legal poker going in texas, people are concerned that this room is being run by a known scammer per other threads and simple googling.

If online poker was made legal/regulated in all of the US and the first site was being opened by Russ Hamilton the reactions would be the same.

its like the story of a scorpion riding on the back of a beaver across a river
the scorpion stings the beaver half way across
as the beaver sinks and is about to drown - he asks the scorpion why did he sting him for the scorpion is going to drown as well
Sorry...it is just my nature

So - when you give this guy your confidential information of bank account info - i wish you the best crossing that river

to date...Mr Eakmann has been given every opportunity to refute any of these claims - he could prove that indeed they are false - not a word

on ripoff.com - they give you the ability to rebuttal - not a word

If i was a business man - and i had such an endeavor to get people to trust me with their money..i would be make sure that i tidied up all loose ends before spending 10s of thousands of dollars opening a club.

Instead - silence - this is posted in Facebook / twitter and THE BEST poker news and views community - would you want your good name (if you had one) to be trashed so much?

This is exactly why I created this thread.

There are two very obvious shill accounts posting in this thread.
