There's definitely more factors than this... when estimating turnout, but WSOP buyins have largely stayed the same while everything else has went up in price. Perhaps that means more people turn out for the bigger events?
Not everything in the price of poker is staying the same.
In 2003 the rake on a $500 tournament was $50. Today it is $80, a 60% increase.
In 2007 the casino employee event field was 1039 players with a prizepool of $467,500.
This year had almost the same size field, 1015 players, but a smaller prizepool of $426300.
To create a 2007 prizepool for this event with the 2023 field size and rake the buyin would need to be about $550.
WSOP buyins have definitely trended down in the last 20 years as there are now a lot of $300 to $600 events. Probably the biggest driver of the increase in turnout.
