Speculations, guesses, suggestions, and theories that pertain to the Horseshoe Casino 2023 World Series of Poker may go here.

It's 10 months away from today and time will fly. It will be here before we know it and it will be fun and exciting. Congrats to the 2022 winners. They have the unique distinction of being the only "Bally's/Paris Casino" WSOP champions. It was Binion's Horseshoe for years; Rio Casino for years; and, it will be Horseshoe Casino for years. This year's champs were firsts and lasts of the "Bally's/Paris WSOP". Congrats to them.

I can't wait for the 2023 WSOP only 10 short months from now.

I am already looking forward to next years WSOP. I start to really get excited around the end of March. Too early to make my Prime Steak House reservation?

How is the Horseshoe casino compared to Rio? I have only been to Rio but didn’t like it that much.

I feel like throwing up at the thought that it is still 10 months away. I hope they come up with a "mid-term WSOP" (with gold bracelets awarded) around November or December. If the U.S. can have mid-term elections, why can't there be mid-term WSOPs?

Technically, won't it be the Paris/Horseshoe WSOP, or are they just not going to use Paris at all next year?

I must say, I actually preferred the vibe at the Rio overall if we are just talking about the feel of the event space. What I liked about the Rio was that all the rooms were crammed right on top of each other, so you really felt like you were in the poker center of the universe. With all the space and the split nature of Paris/Bally's, some of that was lost. It's still a better location simply due to the easy strip access, but purely from a venue standpoint I liked the Rio convention center more.

If possible would be nice to have a way to re-register from Horseshoe... Having to go back across to Paris only to get a seat at a table back in Bally's was a bit of a hassle but not the end of the world...

Would be awesome if they got this for just levels 4 and 5 of the WSOP Main Event Day 3. You get back from dinner break on day 3 and people already begin to start stalling and don't even care to hide it.

Does anyone know if the convention center space is part of the Horseshoe renovation, or if it's just the main casino portion? I really hope they completely refresh the Bally's convention room before WSOP 2023. It's so dingy and ruins the atmosphere. Paris side was fine though.

I think paris won't host cash games next year. Those will be strictly at the horseshoe. As for the tournaments , I'm not sure if paris will host any of them.

It's not poop. It' not pee. It's not puke. But that men's room right outside the Bally's convention center really really stinks. I don't know what that unbearable stench is (probably sewer or chemical based) but they really need to do something about it.

The Paris side was awesome and near perfect. They should do something to the Bally's side that balances it with Paris.

Yeah, that area smells like Satan's fish market on the hottest day in hell, and the placement directly in front of the main entrance is particularly punishing because you are forced to inhale it. So tilting to be grinding a Day 2 and every time you have to take a leak, you have to get into a Disneyland sized queue to use the sweaty fish bathroom.

I'll be first to ask, when is the schedule coming out? LOL

I had a blast at my first WSOP though I didn't cash. I plan to play several events next year.

There is. Open up a tournament account, and use the fast track machines. It's only $3 per re-entry

I want to say that they sometimes announce a couple special events early (late December?), but that the full schedule usually comes in January-February.

To be honest, you can reverse-engineer a rough sketch of the schedule just by comparing recent years. They have patterns of when they like to run certain events. For example, first weekend is always a huge field cheap NLHE event (Big 50, Reunion, Housewarming) while second weekend is always one of the signature $1.5k NLHE (Monster Stack or Milly). IIRC the $1.5k 6-max is always in the week after the first weekend, and so on. It's not going to be 100% accurate, but generally past years are a good predictor of the major recurring stuff.

I was being flippant. But next year I'm gonna schedule around a couple of events.

Let's talk about the important part: How is parking at the horseshoe?

Can’t say how CET will choose to utilize the two resources but I fully expect both Horseshoe and Paris will both be utilized for the WSOP.

What is the rennovation/rebranding going to look like and when will it be done? How much are they actually changing in what is currently Bally's?

Meh, I don't mind it. It's about keeping the look/feel of some parts of an establishment while keeping pace with modern realities. Sometimes you have to do the latter to make sure the former can happen. When people long for the "good old days," they often forget that not all parts of the old days were good.

This was a big deal in the 1990s when new major league baseball stadiums started popping up, and it will continue to happen if/when older parks are replaced. e.g. someday the Boston Red Sox will replace Fenway Park. When that happens, they'll (hopefully) do their best to retain what everyone loves about it – old-timey look, the manual scoreboard, the Green Monster. But they will also adjust for the realities of the modern day – larger seats, no large poles to obstruct views, more parking.

Loosely related, does anyone how the rake worked at the WSOP in the "middle years" of its existence (that is, after fields started to grow but pre-boom)? I wondered about it when I was researching trivia bits for the other thread, and borg's post reminded me about this.

It appears 2002 was the last year the WSOP Main Event had no rake. The following year, there was $7,802,700 in the prize pool from 839 players, meaning it was a $9300+700 event. So did the WSOP make up for this with a higher rake in other events? It doesn't seem to, based on a quick glance of the prize pools vs. fields.

Alternatively, were there events that had a rake on top of the listed buy-in that we now don't see? For example, the 1998 $1,500 stud event had 267 entries for a $400,500 prize pool. But in fact, it was $1,500+100 or something.

I know in the earliest days, the WSOP was probably just a loss leader: invite people to come to Vegas to play, charge no rake, but make all of that up from the increased volume of cash games, hotel stays, etc. But by the mid to late 1990s, that seems unsustainable. Even a $2,500 Omaha8 tourney with "only" 200 players will still require a couple dozen knowledgable dealers plus floor/service staff. (Hell, maybe this discrepancy is why Binion's Horseshoe shuttered and how Harrah's could swoop in and acquire the event.)

Anyway, curious... this was all before my time following poker.

WSOC (World Series of Chess) for 2023. There is enough room in terms of physical space and even time to have it during the WSOP 2023.

Botez, Shahade, and especially Carlson were in WSOP 2022. Nakamura also plays poker. Might as well take advantage of the fact.

Dan Smith and Dan Harrington were formerly rated high in chess. Negreanu, Jungleman, and Dwan have admitted playing chess online.

Flyweights don't have to fight heavyweights. Players can be separted by rating levels. Heavyweights who fight lightweights can have handicaps (like no Rooks, Bishops, etc.)

A way for money to be majorly involved has to be introduced. Perhaps, a WSOC sportsbook, staking, etc.

This thread confused me. Had to do some Google work.

Bally's is being rebranded as Horseshoe for those, not in the know.

Bally's was OK. Stayed there this year. Was shocked my room had no phone or water. Maybe Horseshoe will up the quality.
Though I hear water across the street at Bellagio is $24 a bottle from the mini-bar.

It was great to be able to go directly to the room on break in a short amount of time. The elevators were directly next to the poker area. With that convenience, many well-known faces were in my elevator over the week.
