Because online heads up NL is dead and has been for quite some time. Its not even a viable game format and when heads up does run at significant stakes its highly likely to be solver vs solver strategies with humans implementation in some form. So the whole heads up online skill is irrelevant. okay glad we cleared that up.

Wait, how do people think either of these players are bad? They've both made millions off of playing poker. This is just pure madness to claim they are bad. Are they both the absolute best? Perhaps not, but they are world class tournament players hands down no questions asked.

Perhaps Phil is better at exploiting fish. However, Dan exploits Phil better when they play hands against each other. This is just from YouTube observations.

If you are on the all time money list, you probably didn't get there from just getting lucky. Maybe if you won 1 or 2 tournaments only, but if you've placed in a lot of them and have a net worth of over a million dollars... come on, let's be real here.

Before the lovers of the old school guys come at me, I don't really consider these two actual poker professionals. They've been poker celebrities for some time IMO, not the same thing at all.

As much as I dislike dnegs he is a way way better poker player than PH. Not even close.

I just read Phil book "Poker Brat". The money winning argument is not valid to compare how good a poker player is. In his case he was busto or close to busto even after he won World Series or couple of millions dollars.
Same with DN I remember a year when he won 2M+ but was in red for that year.
The all time money list change a lot because of high rollers , and PH will be out of top 20 soon. DN still playing many of this high rollers he still is good on that list.

Now the bracelets PH won , many of them were on small size 200-300 entries, compare to the size of fields today. Also his closest competitor (Ivey) doesn't bother to play bracelets events for years now.

I'm not saying they are good or bad , I just think the number of bracelets or money won is not a valid argument to compare poker players

In the past Negreanu was a better player than Phil. They both had a very bad habit which was they would let the table know what they were thinking. Helmuth could lay down a strong hand and be correct. Neg would state what your hand is (sometimes correctly) know he was beat and still call anyay. Negreauno now does not state what he is thinking, he is into playing ranges now. I'd have to say he is better since he admitted the game was passing him by with the young guys. Phil thinks he doesn't need to improve and does horrible in cash games.

I think the results both of these men have had during their (long) careers speaks volumes to their ability. Anybody with some scratch can get lucky and win one huge tourney for a big prize, consistently making huge money over the course of decades is different. That said, i'm not a fan of the way either of them play lol.

I will say, adopting a little bit of DN's style has helped be more profitable against tight/aggressive players. DN's most notable play style characteristic is that he plays absolute garbage, i mean just horrible hand selection really, and I would never want to emulate that. In certain situations thought, if against somebody who is both very tight, and very aggressive, I'll loosen up my selection quite a bit, if I hit the flop good and they get a top pair, or something, I know i'm going to make a lot of money (I generally play fairly tight myself). I've seen DN win big hands doing that..

A lot of those mediocre hands are only slight positive EV or slight negative EV when observing them overall. So opening a hand like 53s UTG isn't as bad as it seems and could even be profitable in some circumstances. Something like 72o would be awful though at pretty much every table.

Hellmuth - DN is too susceptible to call with an average hand (that is call raises especially out of position) and get into trouble post flop while I reckon PH throws them away more and is able to get out of sticky situations better.

Jamie Gold has though. Give me Kidpoker over Phil any day. The main event PH wasn't even a 180 man sng. There's a reason Phil gets his butt kicked in every single high roller and DN competes.
