idk if this is an argument for Phil or against him. he sees himself as goat, and not 'just' the WSOP record holder.
like you said, poker can't easily compared to sports. no joe schmoe, who plays hoops on the weekends, can show up at the NBA playoffs and win the championship.

i believe his own ego is the problem. he doesn't understand modern poker, he doesn't even try.
while his long term success is fascinating, he seems to forget he cashed in big w/ UB and still cashes in on his name (gigs, juicy games w/ whales). he thinks just b/c random online dudes disappear after a few years, it's a proof they didn't succeed like he did (not realizing that regulation issues might be a thing, that certain players moved on, even they could beat the game ...).
