As someone new to poker, can someone explain to me why Daniel folds with less than 5BB there?

BC he sucks on a short stack I guess. He folded 2nd pair in a limped pot with under 10BB. He's limping with 5BBs.

I think Nick is in shock of how bad the play is.

I think the worst part is Daniel was supposed to be studying for this match. That was awful.

You could tell Nick was losing his mind at how bad the play was but was trying to keep it together and be respectful.

I thought he gained alot of respect by playing well vs Doug.
What happened?

Daniel played and studied 100bb cash games in his match against Doug. He obviously doesn't know how to adjust his strategy short. Which is surprising considering his tournament history.

playing short stack full ring and playing short stack HU are pretty different. It isn't hard to get preflop charts for sub 25bb HU play though.

This game was like watching two tanks try to knock each other out with their machine guns. Daniel really threw it away by playing ridiculous small ball when Phil was down for the count. That said, I hope they sent Phil to the hospital for precautionary x-rays after this match, just to make sure that the deck didn't cause any serious injuries.

I could not believe how nitty and tight Phil was playing at the beginning of the match when he got down to his last 6K. He was the epitome of weak-tight poker and it looked like Daniel would close him out shortly. So I turned it off.

Now I come back to see how the ending looked and lo and behold Phil got the chips. In reviewing the play I see where Phil coolered him a couple of times and then Daniel just fell apart. His game went to sh-t!

All and all not the best display of heads up poker by either of these "GOAT" players. I can see why Doug would crush either of them.

These guys really are too rich to study a nash chart for 1hr before the match to get a grasp or what?

not to tap the glass but if you're following ******ed charts literally made 15 years ago then you're a losing player

Charts show you the mathematically optimal solution, but they don't show you how much you're giving up by deviating from the optimal solution. Maybe one action is just slightly better than the other, but it also comes with much higher variance.

When you have two players who both think that they're clearly better, and that their per-hand edge is much greater than the premium they have to pay to reduce variance, you have this monstrosity we watched yesterday. It's not wrong to put some value on your tournament life even in a winner-takes-all SnG, if you think you're a better player. You can't just sit down for the next SnG with the same player immediately after if you get it in as a 50.1%-49.9% favorite against a fish.

It's like Negreanu had never heard of fold equity against one of poker's most all-time accomplished folders.

Not defending DNeg though. Its perfectly fine to have a limping strategy even on sub 10bb but he didnt seem to have an overall strategy at all when short, just played ridic nitty and treated Phil as if he never bets with less than top pair.

I tried to watch part of this but found Phil's bitching and whining to be entirely intolerable.

This is the best way to describe their play. I agree 100% and was actually in shock at what I was seeing. Mostly from Dnegs I expect it from Phil lol...
