The first book I ever read... over 15 years ago. I remember how great it was at the time with push / shove charts and calculating "M" when short stacked. Im sure it doesnt hold up very well in todays poker climate, but still probably a good read for beginners.

I always find posts like this amazing. This was one of the greatest poker books ever written, it had a temendous impact on how hold 'em is played, and there's still demand for it today. But if you're not interested you don't have to purchase it.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

if being ashamed of ones' posts was a litmus test for deciding to post stuff, site traffic gets cut in half.

but yeah, although the post did have some truthiness , it was a bit harsh.

Calm down mason. I read it and know the content in there quite well. That’s cool that the book is still selling but imo the strategy there is going to be quite outdated given how much nlhe strategy has evolved over the last years.
Why should I be ashamed of myself for saying that on a poker message board?
Yeah I was being a little snarky but it’s the internet Thats what it’s for.

Ok I’ll bite. Bought the above referenced audio book just now and to be honest while I may be jaded from my prior post/opinion this book will probably not help many people who take mtts at all seriously. (Initial feedback after 15 mins or so of scanning)
Now after 30 mins I’m feeling quite ok about my initial sentiment.
Pg 88 - example 1-12 hand history is a good example of what I mean. All these bet sizing example are pretty random and bad now that software like pio can evaluate the ev of various sizings. Also just gives an example of some random cooler hand where he advocates a lower ev line for pot control saying you got check raised all in so you should have checked to avoid getting your whole stack involved with top pair 2nd kicker.

Pg 155 ex:2/14 is just really bad as well.
Anyways I don’t need to read thru and dissect every little thing wrong with the book, there’s some good stuff in there that someone new to mtt poker could probably get quite a bit out of. But anyone serious about mtts who’s trying to win in in 2021 needs to be utilizing better resources for their game

I think the strat is very helpful for anyone that would want to learn about poker. If you know the rules of the game and nothing else, reading Vol 1 will step you up many levels that would otherwise take years to understand from just playing. This book is the foundation. Any new poker player jumping straight to Jonathan Little or some of the new popular readings is bound to mess up the more complicated strategies. Harringotn strat gives you some great training wheels. His book gets you to the final table while the new books might make you a winner. Just my thoughts.

I started playing two years ago with 0 help but this book. Bought the Harrington book and went to the local live tourneys and was able to consistently win. The second book I read was Gus Hansen's lol. That set me back from winning a few months but helped me as a player to understand how different successful players think about and play their games.

FWIW, I recommended the Harrington on Hold'em books to my grandfather who asked for recommendations so he can better understand what tournament players on TV are thinking.

Hey genius you realize different people play at different levels right. I'm sure there are books and concepts over your head too

I’m not saying there isn’t - I just said that the strat in there is out dated and not that useful for non beginners then mason said I should be ashamed of myself, asked me if I had read the updated version so before talking more **** read up some more on it, and found that my original opinion was mostly correct.

But if someone has literally never played a poker tournament before and has less than I’d say 100 ish hours of poker experience the book did a pretty decent job of explaining for a beginner.

Perhaps the beginner would be ready to move into a sick house in Thailand with all his poker friends after reading it.

I mean perhaps. If he runs good but if he has downswing could end up in some of the darker shadier parts of Thailand after his friends abandoned him and kicked him out of the poker house because he wasn’t participating in the pio study sessions and all he wants to do is keep reading Harrington books.
Then after his heater ends and win rate plummets into the red, he starts playing bigger buy bis. Borrowed some money from a thai criminal sindicate but then after he gambles this away in the pits he is forced to carry some drugs as a mule. gets caught by the Thai police and ends up being killed in jail. So there’s also that

Actually, I was thinking he could watch "The Micros" instead of that whole being killed in jail thing.

The internet is just an additional channel facilitating human interactions - it is rather sad that we have to stress the fact, that basic principles of educated communication should still apply ...

+1, i still recommend super system to this day to new players because they need to start somewhere and diving directly in solver based strategy will be too much for someone new to the game

harrington on holdem will be outdated for sure, but anyone buying that audiobook today is going to do much better in their home game or weekly bar freezeout as a result

I think realizing that being edgy on the Internet is no great sign of wit, originality, or bravery, is a discovery that comes with life experience. Discovering that lacking life experience is nothing to brag about also comes with life experience.

Given that poker appeals to younger people in general, and tends to stunt personal development in some, it's to be expected that there will always be a critical mass of people who view Internet as an opportunity to be *******s with no repercussions.
