Bob has said he wouldnonly accept a deal that involved equity.

Pretty cool if he got that.

Could def see Mark Cuban and bob getting along. Good for him, he seems like a really nice guy. Probably nice having a steady income for awhile.

Don't know a ton about the guy but I always liked him on Big Poker Sundays and in the few interviews I've seen of him. Congrats!

Longtime Dallas Mavericks president of basketball operations and general manager Donnie Nelson is out after 24 seasons with the franchise, the team announced Wednesday.

Nelson's departure comes after internal friction due to the increasing decision-making influence of Mavericks director of quantitative research and development Haralabos Voulgaris, sources told ESPN.

Voulgaris, a former professional gambler hired by the Mavs in 2018, has reported directly to owner Mark Cuban and communicated directly with coach Rick Carlisle despite Nelson's objections, sources said.

Also apparently some issue between him and Doncic.

Interesting. I don't really follow the NBA. You'd think Bob would be careful to tread lightly around the young superstar.

I don't think being careful with words has ever been Bob's style.

The article in the Athletic was pretty direct in terms of a hit piece on Haralabob - basically said he's a jerk to everyone including Doncic but he's got Cuban's ear and is directly behind every move, including many that haven't worked. Lot of speculation the story was planted by someone; first suspect was Doncic agent, but with Nelson leaving today, I think that's where I'd put my gaze.

Just so it's known, you can easily bet on sports while working for a sports team or playing on the team. If you literally can't fathom simple avenues on how to do so under the radar than you are a special type of stupid - like Pete Rose.

Is anyone shocked that Voulgaris is a pain to work with and appears to be self centered when talking to others?

It sounds like he was doing a great job as quasi manager. And now Cuban has a choice... choose between his young GM, who seemingly assembled their current roster, or Luca Doncic - one of the best young stars in the NBA. I think I have an idea of where this is going.

The athletic article was a hit piece so while I’m sure it was true in part I doubt the friction is as bad as reported…I’m sure everyone including Bob knows that if Luka wants him gone he’s gone

This.

I find it very hard to believe that Bob would purposefully do anything to alienate one of the best players in the league. Bob’s an outspoken guy who speaks his mind, which is refreshing tbh.

He’s also no dummy, and he’s certainly not stupid enough to engage in some war he has no shot at winning.

But the story writes itself (ex-gambler fights with generational talent, oh the drama!) and that’s why we’re talking about it.

+ Bob is hilarious, I'm sure that bodes well for him in some capacity

His response to Fredy Deep when Freddy wanted to fight him had me laughing so damn hard my sides cramped up

Spoiler:
IIRC, without missing a beat, Bob said sorry Freddy, I don't fight anyone under 5 feet tall and over 50, he told it on one of the old PokerRoad podcasts in case anyone knows how to bring those up

Nelson has every right to be upset about the situation with Bob. I like him and he's a smart guy, but that doesn't mean he knows how to build or get the most out of basketball teams. The Nelson family is legendary and actually has success in the NBA, what's Bob accomplished in the NBA besides being good on betting on it before he got there? They are only even relevant because they have Luka, the team would be nothing without him. Cuban has lost the plot as of late though, so I'm sure he will run Luka out.

TLDR; Good guy and smart guy doesn't =good NBA guy that should be making personal decisions.

That wasn't really the point of the movie(or book). The point was that sports are changing and that you can't really think like the old guard to be competitive. A lot of that philosophy is what Bob brings to the Mavericks. Regardless of what people say or what reports come out, Cuban and others in organization must fully believe in what Bob brings to the table or else it would have been him that was canned rather than Donnie.
