I think you're reading something more into this than is actually there. It seems Alpha Fish is expressing something that could be true while still not negating Hal's need for help. And Mason knows Hal and believes the need to be sincere.

I know Hal only from phone conversations with regard to 2+2 business, but we are certainly on friendly terms and our conversations went beyond business at times. I have no reason to think Hal is untrustworthy, and Mason who knows him much better than I trusts him, so that's good enough for me to believe this is legitimate.

As far as healthcare.gov goes, not everyone qualifies for an insurance that they can afford for various reasons. Healthcare.gov isn't some magic wand that makes healthcare affordable for everyone (although it helped a bit despite it being gutted by the republicans right before the passing of the Affordable care act.

I've never donated to a GoFund (donated to other legit charities over my life). Couple questions....

1. I'm assuming GoFundMe isn't a 501C3 org where you get a tax receipt at the end of the year, correct?

2. Do they have any policies/procedures to make sure the money goes where it's intended?

This is true, but....... You have to get approved for disability, which in the grand ole USA takes multiple years with usually an automatic denial on the first application, thereafter requiring an attorney and lengthy process to go forward. Social security lawyers make major bank off this. And this really doesn't matter how sick you are. My brother-in-law died before he got approved for disability. The other thing about disability is you literally can't work from the time you apply, since working implies you aren't disabled. Doesn't matter if that working kills you (actually they would prefer that). My wife went through this last part. Much the same with VA disability claims for veterans, they pretty much disapprove the first application as a matter of policy and hope you just give up. Many do. But the big thing is delaying having to pay for months and years. Saves the taxpayers a lot, I suppose. Much better that the money go to foreign wars.

With few exceptions that would be unusual, US insurance policies have a maximum payment by the consumer that beyond that limit the insurance company pays 100%. The maximum payout by law is just over $7000/year, of course excluding the premium.

While that is still a lot of money, it isn't close to needing $100k right now, or even in the next couple of years. Based on the basic needs being potentially misrepresented and GoFundMe takes a lot of the money off the top for "expenses," I think the friends of the person in question can find better ways to support him.

Exactly, privatization of healthcare will only make things worse. When people are given the incentive to profit, they will never truly fix the problem. In government, politicians do a good job or get kicked out of office, so they have the incentive to help their citizens.

It is hard to find a better way imo. gofundme is acting pretty alone here, has some kind of monopoly, and is trusted like an escrow by everyone. I dont think the fees are that bad. Everyone is using them, you can send a link to anyone and immediately everyone knows whats up. Whats the better alternative? A person? A poker player? No I dont think. I think this is a good cause. I also think anyone in the US who isn't in favor of universal healthcare should be ashamed. But, do you have any idea how many requests like this there are every single day? It is sickening. I am low income retired and can't give to everything (although my charity is higher percentage wise than many rich people). My relatives in the UK literally never have to make requests like this. This stuff makes me embarrassed to be American. I hope this guy gets help. I hope that everyone votes to make sure this crap never has to happen (and not being political here because both parties are owned by the for-profit health care (noncare) system). Think about that.
