You can't find a house in Vancouver under 500K unless it some dilapidated POS shack. Everything is more expensive, if you buy a taco or something in the US for a buck, that same thing here is going to cost ~$1.69 + 12% tax on top.

You would have trouble affording a bachelor apartment on 40 hours/week of minimum wage. They usually want rent to be 1/3 of your income at most, and good luck finding anything under $600 unless sharing.

Medical is probably cheaper here than the US, you don't get billed seeing a doctor or going to the hospital, but everything else is ridic expensive.
The point of this is you cannot live on your own off minimum wage in BC. Rent + expenses is too expensive. Even if our minimum wage is higher in Canada than the US, the minimum wage in BC is lowest or second lowest in the country and Vancouver is one of the most expensive cities in the country.

what i know of vancouver: minimum wage ~$10.25/hr avg furnished 2 BR in yaletown (the nice part of downtown) ~$2200/mo on craigslist

as for the food i had no idea, i'll try to pay attention more next time i'm over there...maybe it just feels cheaper bc i'm paying with $2 coins

Our minimum wage is $8.75. And it only went up to that a few months ago.

Yaletown is full of pretentious wannabes. Many of your neighbours may think you are a loser when they learn about what you are really doing in Vancouver. So be prepared to say something sound when you encounter them.

You're probably not going to like the prices of the food in downtown. One more thing: many jobs are being outsourced or replaced by international workers and many people who work a min-wage job will not get full-time status, so they end up working at least 2 part-time jobs in a day.

I really don't care, but this is what you should keep in mind. I'd prefer the pros to come to Vancouver. More money for me :P

Vancouver is great, but I don't see why these pros don't use this opportunity to go explore the greatest continent in the world. Seriously, it's just a better version of the US. Go journey through Europe and grind it up along the way. Make use of the situation in front of you.

i'm sure it has a lot to do with proximity to the us. canada/mexico etc are much closer not to mention most us players know a lot more people in those 2 countries than any in europe.

and @gaiachaos i just looked up the first page of housing on craigslist. although if $2200 is expensive i guess i wasn't too wrong earlier about living expenses being not too bad. and welcome to earth, the majority of society looks down on poker as a profession, not just yaletown (altho i haven't had a single person berate me for being a poker player while i visited vancouver)

oh and to be fair my memory isn't the best so i cant fully put the blame about minimum wage on my buddy.

as for living expenses... yes it's expensive but a) it's well worth it for what is consistently ranked one of the top 5 (if not #1) cities in the world on tons of major statistical rankings, b) If you have any decent qualifications you should be able to easily make ends meet... I only make $15/hr at my regular job + some side income @ uNL online and live 1-2 (weekends) and I'm able to live quite comfortably.

My main suggestion would be getting a place near downtown but not in the downtown core. I pay under 600 a month to split a nice 2 bedroom (a bit under 1200, split w/ roommate obv) in North Vancouver. If I want to go downtown it's a 15 min seabus, easily worth paying only like 2/3 of what rent is Downtown

just get a place in North Van it's cheap here and the North Shore is very nice

I also live on the North Shore. I would never live downtown, it's not my lifestyle at all.

I've lived in a furnished apartment with a view3 of the city and the water for the last 3 years, paying 1750 a month. Soon moving to a 2bdr with the gf, will be only 1500 a month combined so I'll have a bunch of extra money each month to spend on fun. I'm only 15 minute drive from the city, but I never go because the city isn't my thing.

BC is great, and if you're coming here for online play and aren't a big city social type, there are hundreds of smaller towns you can live in, enjoy the outdoor life when not playing, smoke great bud, etc.

I don't care about the live games because I play live about twice a year. Online is where it's at get 50x more hands while wearing my underwear and doing other things on my other monitor and able to take breaks to play with the dog or make some food whenever.

Vancouver is great, lots of good online grinders and there are probaly 6-7 huge Poker rooms all in or within 30 minutes of downtown.

Very good night life and great beaches to chill at.

I used to live at the end of Cambie bridge, and it was a 10 minute walk to Edgewater....Canadian Casinos are kinda lame, most places are only regulated to be able to run certain games and certain limits. Good luck trying to get a NL 2-7 game in Edgewater, pretty sure they are only allowed to run Holdem and Omaha
