I don't think Tom was down millions at online PLO. I think he was a comfortable winner in those games, but I can't remember exactly, and you can't search for results on High Stakes DB anymore.
Tom's big losses really came to Isildur and Jungleman playing heads up hold em.
Ideally I think Tom likes to play deep. It's the game that he's the best at because he's fearless, clever and plays a lot of garbage pre flop.
David Benefield used to buy in short a lot back in the day, Zigmund and Tom would play and 3 bet every hand and David would just get it in pre with a decent holding, in the hope that they would be playing garbage and that they would made maybe fold each others equity out of the hand on the flop, turn or river.
I did see Tom buying in short the odd time online, maybe if he didn't have a lot of money in his account, but it was the exception rather than the rule.

On HCL I think everyone bought in short at the beginning of that PLO game, it was just the game dynamics. He sat with a million in no limit vs Doug et al a month ago.
I don't think Tom has some king of a next level genius strategy, where he feels he has to give action to get action.
He just has a very gambly stlyle of play, and he picks up a lot of edge vs fish when playing deep.
