When the riverboats opened in Tunica, Mississippi in the early 1990’s there were a plethora of colorful poker players who patronized them. These are some of the quotes I can remember.
“I don’t know if I’m a gambler on a losing streak or just a loser on a gambling streak.”
“ I’d rather be the best of the bad players than the worst of the good players”.
“All the bad players think I’m good, and all the good players think IÂ’m a fish”.
After a player suffered a bad beat and subsequently reminded the table of his misfortune, this character would tell him “ no one gives a **** but you”. That sums up the empathy pretty succinctly.
And in the same vein, often when this particular table left the game, he would make the comment “ good luck to everybody except one person” leaving everyone wondering??.

Actually hitting numbers a lot more exciting than watching a ball spin in circles.

#5 is funny/true tho
#3 is physiologically correct. That is how the dopamine system works. It reinforces anticipation fulfillment.

Max Morath used this line in all his Ragtime Music stage shows in the 1970's...

... and attributed it to the fictional Finley Peter Dunne character ("Mr. Dooley") from the 1920's.

Forgot about that one. So good. Was that in response to the Pokerstars chat where the guy said 'your dog is ugly' and the dude's avatar was his kid? Or were those 2 separate golden moments?

The only quote that comes to mind was so short and perfect that I figured it was from a movie, a book, or something clearly recognizable. I google searched it just now after seeing this thread and it showed up as 0 results so I will have to credit it to my Grandpa for now. If there is a true origin I'd love to know where it was from.

"Always cut away from home"

Basically translated to if you aren't playing inside your own home, or with your friends/family/people you trust, insist on cutting the deck. We only played Rummy, and a lot of it, so maybe that was a phrase more popular in that community.

From the opening scene of California Split, a very realistic banter of an angry shitreg trying to angle in a hand at 2/4limit lowball and as the pot gets scooped he continues to complain about a detail of the hand and the main character whose being accused of collusion just says "THAT'S YESTERDAYS NEWS!". This line plays in my head every time someone is telling me a bad beat story.
