I don't think there is any harm in running these online tournaments, but there is no question that the U.S. attendance is going to be minimal.
^ I live a few hours from the NV border, so it's enticing to want to drive across, get a receipt to prove I was there, drive back home, use a VPN, and grind. Going there just to rent a room and lock myself in to play online poker isn't appealing or worth it.

That may be true for Nevada, but it sounds like you don't realize how many tens of millions of people live within a reasonable drive of New Jersey, including from NYC and its suburbs and Philly and its suburbs. Serious players might even entertain visiting a friend in NJ from Baltimore or DC.

Derail but the mlb championship being called the world series is old enough that the origin isnt even clear.

Cant think of another example of a major north american sports league including "world" in the title of their championship. WSOP makes some sense as its participants (teams of 1 if you will ) are from many places outside of north america.

Unsure if this has been pointed out ITT yet, but they are expecting to also run a live WSOP during Nov/Dec

This somewhat specific time was also mentioned in the Covid thread - do you have a source for this? I know they said they'd be looking to the fall when they postponed, but I've seen nothing else since. Did I miss something?

Yes sir!

https://www.pokernews.com/news/2020/...dule-37396.htm

"Those who enjoy other formats or consistent action at five-figure stakes shouldn't give up hope just yet, however. WSOP Executive Director Stewart indicated nothing has changed as far as the planned running of a live 2020 WSOP later in the year.

"We are still hopeful the traditional WSOP may be played November-December and for all of our partners are considering this a brand extension versus a pure replacement,” he told PokerNews. He also revealed that all official ITM statistics (cashes, final tables, etc.) will be tracked and reported, and that player identities would be validated. "

So that's the literal meaning of 'global pandemic'!

Travelling in and of itself is not singficantly more dangerous than staying inside one city. It's a matter of how you behave. Anyone can be an idiot in their own city. For example, I actually DROVE PAST the card room parking lot and THOUGHT ABOUT GOING IN -- Florida has the greatest poker in the world right now.

But I behaved. As I would on the road I travel to NJ to play the WSOP.

I'm thinking of a Winnebago.

I believe any American bracelets won in these online events will be forever known as the "covid bracelets" and will carry as much prestige as WSOPC rings.

The American side will have the softest WSOP online fields in history (no more European beasts + disproportional amount of East coast fish) while the opposite is true for the ROW. There's absolutely nothing wrong with easy money and it's already good enough of a motivator for playing, just don't expect anyone to be impressed with a bracelet that you've won at a glorified circuit event.

Who cares. I don’t think people are impressed anyways with regular bracelets (I.e donkaments right ?) the field sizes are just a lotto anyways. It’s 2020. I think 70% of the field is capable of winning a tourney any given day.

The bracelet is worth what it’s worth to the individual. I’d be happy. Also want the cash (duh)

Gives me something to look forward to in July... hoping for a nice oct-dec shot at Vegas too

This is like saying that winning at your local casino is the same as winning at the WSOP. Next time you're at a final table with three of the top 20 players in the world slap yourself for talking nonsense. Winning a bracelet is still prestigious as **** and more so now than ever, particularly because the fields are so tough.

The most "Prestigious" bracelet is an 8,000 person 10k buy-in donkament that is often won by players who aren't in the top 25% of players in their local card room. Joe Rogan once responded to an Ike Haxton WSOP comment by saying something to the effect of "Wait, Jaime Gold isn't a professional poker player? I thought he was the world champ?" Prestige is subjective and often assigned to the wrong things.

Exactly

I’d be happy as hell if I won ... but that doesn’t make me better than others. Tourneys are such a **** show. But I still love them.

Do you feel the same about the 500 and 1k donkaments at the rio, what about the online tournaments last year?

Most of them from what I hear were just like daily deepstacks and they became bracelet events because wsop were losing trafic to other events with lower buyins in Vegas at some times during the summer.

There's no great prestige, it's all the same stuff. I can see distiguishing main event winners and the 50k championship but the rest it has no great value really. Just like the WCOOP and SCOOP were prestigious and now it's completelly diluted and it's not because of this year either.

I don't disagree with you at all. I believe those $300 events dilute the prestige as much as anything but they're also good for the game. Btw, I've heard $10k regs complain that $1500 events are diluting the prestige so it's all relative.

What I'm saying is pretty much anyone who's won a bracelet has probably also sweat blood and tears to get there and you can't just brush it off as winning another tournament. Maybe I play too many limit events because it never feels easy, quite the opposite, and I deeply respect any player who can come out on top in those fields.
