Getting more women to play poker Getting more women to play poker

I feel like getting more women to play poker would be good for the game and could start a second poker boom if it were to catch on among them.

However, the female players I know all say they are constantly insulted, flirted with, and/or made to feel they don't belong at the table. They say they can use this to their advantage, to an extent, but acknowledge that it gets very annoying and turns other women off from wanting to play.

Might I suggest we not always point out when a woman is at the table? Maybe don't desperately flirt with every female within a ten foot radius of us? How about just treating them and their abilities like any other opponent?

Why are we purposely making it uncomfortable for approximately 50% of the global population to play poker when their money is worth the same as anybody elses?

Problem solved. Let the next boom begin!

I don't recall saying this thread would solve the problem nor lead to the poker boom. It is, however, food for thought. Thank you for your world-class contribution to the thread, though.

This thread will soon be filled with sexist jokes followed by some ppl who point out, that this is exactly the problem, why most women don't want to play. there will de-rails about trump voters and why PS is killing poker anyway. in between we have the serious poster, who try to answer your vague OP, but this thread will be dead soon, even if the nvg most bored trolls will try to have some fun. so long story short, can we just accept, that this is a failed thread and let it die with some dignity

This is a sort of established topic that has been discussed at length already in various other places/forums. What does this thread add to the conversation? I see no unique or interesting point that you've raised.

Sorry, but I wouldn't recommend anyone playing a game where most people lose. Besides, I don't want to see my daughter selling 150% of herself in the main event 10 years from now.

I think the "Professional" aspect turns some women off to poker. Small sample, my mom used to love to play poker at the casinos. She would join the tournament, have some drinks and chat with the old guys. Then the boom died off and all that was left were young, quiet, stone faced "professionals" I still remember my mom telling me she doesn't like to play poker anymore. I even offered to buy her in, she said she'd rather just play the slots. Kind of sad.

You realize women saying they are being flirted with and insulted because they are "women" is just a cop out and excuse. Have you ever watched any poker tables? Men are constantly harassed by each other. Not because they are men but because its competition. I wait for the day when equality exists. Lame topic is lame

Every time I play at a table with a woman they're always treated like royalty.

Perhaps more women would play poker if they were allowed to pay more rake than men.

The quality of the individuals that make up 95% of poker tables is the problem you need to solve

Have never seen this happen at the poker table when I've been there. Not that it doesn't happen, but I sincerely doubt it is a common occurrence.

I'm sure there would be a valid reason why competitive gambling against other people appears to be more appealing to men than women.

it's kind of hard to have sex with them if you don't insult them or at least flirt with them first! so what do you expect me to do?

That's part of their complaints. A lot of women feel they are treated differently because they are being looked down on. Sort of like "oh look at the girl who wants to play poker. We'll coddle her and make her feel better about being here." When, in reality, they want to be treated like a serious competitor trying to take your money.

^ How do you reconcile that with creating this thread which inherently treats women as different types of players and where you suggest making them "feel better about being here"?

There's no reconciliation to be made. They're not different types of players and the suggestion isn't to treat them as such. Quite the opposite. You make them feel better about playing by treating them the same. Don't coddle, don't condescend. It really isn't that difficult. The issue isn't that they are different types of players, it's that they get treated as different types of players. That's their complaint.

This is a great idea. The influx of fish would be great for the game.

this is the problem that male feminists and new wave feminists face. since america is already equal and the least sexist country on earth, the new feminists end up being the ones who are actually discriminatory and sexist by tearing men down as an entire group instead of focusing on actual individual instances of sexism

Lame thread. There are also many less women in math class, and computer science even though IQ is parallel between men and women. Society currently doesn't see poker as for women, and female poker players are unusual. Pinning it on the attitudes of men at the poker table is laughable.

Enterprising women have far more lucrative ways to make money than poker. Those women have no need to stoop to the dregs of the likes of poker.

We've had women's events to try to draw more of them into our room. I don't think they've been particularly successful. We do have women regs but they are of course a small fraction compared to the men.

I don't think there's an obvious single answer in how to attract more women into poker.
