PLO obvioiusly requires more skill than NLHE in one sense: you have 4 cards instead of 2, so there are a lot more possible hands and draws to keep track of. But I think that a great player can dominate a merely good player in NLHE to a greater extent than he can in PLO. So in that regard, NLHE is more skillful. And I"ve played a lot of both games.

That's the "lower-level skill" of PLO you're talking about, but that's not why PLO considered skillful.

For example, in terms of "lower-level skill," i.e., the skills required for a beginner to figure out what he has, Omaha-8 is considered more skillful than PLO. However, advanced skills max out pretty quickly in O8 and is therefore considered relatively simple compared to PLO.

"Higher level skill," i.e., bluffing and value strategies are where PLO's real depth lies.

What's your reasoning?

Are you sure you're not confusing EV with variance?

Try it sometime. Play stud at a 8 handed table and after the hand tell me every dead card. Most long time pros are very good at stud games because they do just that. Flop games are flop games- when I get my money in with a set and you have an open ended str8 and flush draw you are going to call. What is skillfull about that?
