Yeah all time tournament of Legends would be amazing. All the living TOC winners plus other standouts like Matt Jackson, Arthur Chu, etc.

But really they have no reason to rig a boring outcome. If your gna rig the game, your gna make it really really good tv. any casual jeopardy fan that has no idea who alex is probably thought that this tourny was boring.
Can't rig gameshows.... anymore at least.

love how Trebek just outright tells Jacob he's the most dominant they've ever seen, which is saying something in of itself

Obviously, it was a dominant result. However, I don't think it was dominant in the way Trebek (or most casual observers) might think it is.

As you can see from the Coryat scores, Alex didn't crush Matt on knowledge. The reason the score was so lopsided is that Alex plays with an aggressive wagering style that I haven't seen employed very often.

It's all about the Daily Doubles. Alex goes for broke, which not many people have the guts to do. The only other that comes to mind is Roger Craig.

Listen to the audience reaction when Alex bets all $15k on a Daily Double in the first game of the final. People aren't used to seeing that. They're accustomed to people who are good at trivia that mindlessly bet $5,000 just because it's a round number.

I like the way Alex plays. It's obviously high variance, but it can pay off huge. As someone noted, the key to Jeopardy is to get yourself a lock game going into Final Jeopardy, instead of risking the entire match on one question. Betting huge on Daily Doubles is the best way to cruise into lock games.

I wonder if more people will follow this template, or if Alex's unique background as a top poker player makes him one-of-a-kind.

This is the best of the best, so the pace is super fast! And you can see everybody trying to click in furiously. Alex did awesome - they're playing in teams though, and for Alex' portion of the competition there was only one Double Jeopardy question ... and unfortunately one of the other contestants found it before he did. It seemed like the show knew Alex would go hunting for the Double Jeopardy at the bottom of the screen, so they moved it up to the top so people would have more money to wager by the time they found it, and there'd be more drama? Before the other person found it, Alex had almost twice the lead over the other two, so, it being found late did wind up being an opportunity for the person who found it because he was able to double up and take the lead, and it kind of gave him momentum and stuff ...

But they only played the first round yesterday - tonight Alex' teammates get to finish the game, so it's not over yet. Not sure when they'll be starting game 2 - maybe tonight or Monday, and it sounds like Alex should be on again then, is that how it will work?

Re: Former poker standout Alex Jacob 6-time winner on Jeopardy

Double Jeopardy, but too early

I lost on Jeopardy about 25 years ago precisely because I found (and answered) the last Double Jeopardy correctly, but too early. There were two squares left, I picked one, which was the Double Jeopardy, doubled up and got the last one correct also.

Unfortunately, I was behind going into Final Jeopardy and lost when we both doubled again. Had I picked the last two squares in the reverse order, I would have won the whole game....

Instead of $28,000, I won a case of Jolly Rancher candy, a weekend trip to a water park and a pair of MC Hammer style pants.

Re: "Trying to click in furiously"

The truth it seems is that everyone playing knows 98%+ of the correct responses, that part is not too tough. The game was one of timing pushing the buzzer after Alex reads the answer, and hoping your buzzer actually worked correctly. Buzz in too early and you are locked out. One problem is there is a guy sitting to the side for the production crew that clicks in after Alex finishes reading the "answer". If you play for Alex's finish but you beat that guy however, you are "too early" and get locked out.

Interesting game.

Re: Former poker standout Alex Jacob 6-time winner on Jeopardy

That's a cool story! (except for the part where you lost 'the flip' )

Guess everybody likes to feel like competitions are decided on merit - but maybe when the caliber of talent is tight, who wins can wind up turning on some surprising things, like buzzer timing ... and luck, even in Jeopardy?

Your Jeopardy experience must have been good practice at getting used to the randomness of poker

An update from before - looks like they had a schedule for the Jeopardy All-Stars up on twitter - guess Alex will be on Friday tomorrow ... and maybe later next week as well? (Is 'Double Jeopardy' what they call round 2? And the Daily Double is the special square where the contestant who finds it can bet as much as they have, as part of Single Jeopardy or Double Jeopardy?)

One thing Jeopardy taught me is to go with my gut at times, even in poker.

One of the clues under "English Queens" referred to something like "This wife of Henry II blah, blah, blah....

I snap-buzzed and answered "Who was Eleanor of Aquitane", which was correct. I had no f**king idea who Eleanor of Aquitane was, had never recalled ever studying English history, and had no clue why I knew the answer like a boss.

(This was 25+ years ago, pre Internet; I finally Googled her name this morning. Apparently legendary .... married King of France, annuled that marriage then married King of England, also mother of Richard the Lion-hearted, etc.)

I also learned that running my "chip stack" up to like $28K did not mean sh*t if I did not get to cash it

just saw the notification for the all-star game and then realised that i completely missed AJs ToC run. was nice to catch up!

in the all-star game, the 6 team captains picked via a draft-system and AJ was pick #1.

Is Gzech really Alex Jacob? If so, that is really cool. If you have a biography in the works, I'll be one of the first in line to get it

If you're really that interested, you might want to start with this thread. No, Gzech is not Alex Jacob.

Jacob wasn't on yesterday, they change team members everyday I guess, then change again to the 3rd member for final jeopardy

Appreciate the behind the scene look at jeopardy
So far I’m unimpressed with the latest all-star competition...too many moving parts
