I don't think a sponsored player has to just bring new players in to be a positive investment from the site. Online poker is a huge industry already and lots of players for a site with only 10-20% market share to attract from within.

Stars went for Nadal and CR and you really can't get more global reach than those two, i don't think it worked being profitable for them, those two probbly cost £20m for the year. In sportsbetting for european markets new player acquisition costs £300-350 per player, those two need to be bringing in 70k players a year and even for those boys thats a big ask.

I don't think they'd have done much if anything for player retention and that's probably a huge advantage that someone like Fedor will have at what you must think is a fraction of the cost. Stars cut Rafa and CR but have held onto Jake for example, who with 0.00000001% of the global reach you'd think has been a miles better invested ROI wise.

Guess there must be all sorts of value in learning all the new skills that come from starting and running a business too - maybe having that experience might make it easier to do more things now, opening the door to other possibilities, and stuff?
