Why do people think it is admirable to not change your life one bit after getting this amount of money?

Well, every life is different. But most people already lead lives worth keeping, and would be miserable if suddenly they were unemployed and wandering around the world as a sorta rich lottery winner has been.

Sure, valid point. But most lottery winners can not navigate that slippery slope, and it pleases me to see this guy not try.

I live in the same town. He was already doing ok for himself, while it's obviously a nice chunk of money, it's not really life changing for someone that already owns a nice home and has a successful business.

I think not wanting to change anything is called Already being ****ing happy. Which is admirable.

I've gifted a big chunk of the money to family and invested in another business as a sleeping partner.
Wow why would people admire that?

Ok, so his life is perfect. Wouldn't change a thing, got it.

Giving money to family is admirable, but that wasn't my question now was it.

I don't know, but the fact that there is a 200+ post thread here dedicated to those worried about what Mike Leah does with his money, proves that they do.

I'm sure he has changed some. Can buy some more extravagant meals now, doesn't have to worry so much about getting the "bargain". Easier to take trips when wanted etc.

No need to suddenly change everything you do in life though, especially for someone of Hesp's age.

I mean if someone who is working is comfortable dropping $10k on a poker main event seat for something fun to do they probably are already living a fairly comfortable life.

(Can't remember if he won the seat in a satty or not but If not then that applies^)

A common *stereotype* of a Yorkshire person is as tight with money: there's a British saying that "a Yorkshireman is a Scotsman with all the generosity squeezed out of him", which references how Scots are also stereotyped as being tight.

This can be seen in the Yorkshireman's Motto:

'Ear all, see all, say nowt;
Eyt all, sup all, pay nowt;
And if ivver tha does owt fer nowt
Allus do it fer thissen.

Translation: Hear all, see all, say nothing; Eat all, drink all, pay nothing; And if ever you do anything for nothing – always do it for yourself.

Sorry I should have done and usually do. Had to edit down the piece as I am sticking to 100 words max per post so had trouble squeezing in the source link.

To us in the UK, the Yorkshire stereotype is pretty common knowledge. It may or may not apply to John Hesp.

Other Yorkshire stereotypes that non Brits may not be aware of are of them being plain speaking, blunt and opinionated and referring to the county they live in, Yorkshire, as "God's own country".

I'm originally from Yorkshire and, other than pride in the area and the accent, the stereotyping is way off.

So it's just a pure coincidence then that two of the bluntest speaking and most opinionated figures in British sporting history, Geoffrey Boycott and the late Brian Clough, are ermmm, both from Yorkshire!

Both absolute legends but they do fit part of the stereotype.

Obviously Yorkshire is a very big and diverse area and my instinct is that the stereotype
is becoming more diluted and less prevalent as time moves on.

My favourite Yorkshire phrase is "tintintin" (It isn't in the tin)
