generally horrible - France, UK, Ireland, Italy, Greece
either really good or really ****ing bad - Scandies and Finns

The Germans were my favourite monkeys until poker strategy castrated them.

The more north you go, the better the players and that goes vice versa. Finland might be the best because of Patrik Antonius alone.

Here's Ladbrokes' report from 2005. Dollars won for $1 staked. Quite surprising that some nations were winners as a whole (on Ladbrokes only). It's clear which country rules tho

1 Finland 1,01060
2 Canada 1,00788
3 China 1,00569
4 Austria 1,00058
5 Sweden 1,00049

This was in finnish site http://www.pokeri.info/uutiset/uutiset2005-4.htm

I'm sure those lists are in english somewhere in the internet. I can't find them tho.

That's before rake, though? If so, some nationalities would finish as winners, and others as losers, but they are all losing. Unless rake is already accounted for.

Actually looking at it again, numbers seem quite strange. The article also compares players by age groups. All age groups are losers, but they lose way too little if the rake is accounted for. But if it's before rake, they shouldn't all be losers, but break even on average. Doesn't add up.

Got to believe it if it's in the internet tho.

No country is better than another due to an inherent ability to play poker. It just comes down to experience. Most American players have had a good head start playing poker due to the sheer amount of coverage it gets on the t.v, so I would say Americans are a more knowledgeable bunch of poker players as a whole.
As for Europe the Germans still do suck a lot as it's an emerging market. The French and Italians are just plain terrible... Think they're just being introduced to it now. The Brits are a mixed bunch, some have been playing for a few years and are generally good, while there's a load of noobs just starting due to the big Ad campaigns out recently. Than the Fins, Swedes and Norwegians are prob the best as it's always dark and they have nothing better to do.

I guess climate plays a huge part and it would also explain why the Fins, Swedes and Norwegians can t play football.

Ok there have been a few posts in the thread that i would like to explore so to say:

Economy - In countires say such as ireland, there economy has been booming for years and has created alot of wealth for young and old and hence some of this is getting into the poker scene, there so so much money that alot of young people don't respect money and maybe play above their roll - also people can afford alot of luxury items and hence don't really bother building a roll/improving their game and moving to the next level.

Culture - adding on from the economy, 4h8red made the point the fins, swedes and norwegians are in the dark for like half the year and have nothing better to do and hence won't have the same nite time culture that say the brites/irish have - The italians are said to bad at poker - would it be fair to say that this is simple because of what ever way there been thought - as off the top of my mine i can't think of any well known players.

As for the other nations - I haven't really got the experience to judge on them, but one poster above made a very good point imo - americans learn poker from an early age - its part of their culture - a passtime so to say, whereas in europe, especailly in ireland/uk their is a negative few when someone says that they play poker. Recently i went for interviews, and i was adviced not to mention that i played poker as a passtime - now surely this is going to hinger young people. For example, a 20 year old looking for time off to play for his soccer/rugby/snooker team etc- would have no problem - change the situation to poker - and imo in woudn't go down well at all.

Thanks for all the views and thoughts.

I'm not really sure about the Italians really... I would probably guess it goes back to what I said about TV coverage... As English speaking shows aren't really shown over there, I doubt many would have watched any poker shows, and as such there just aren't many Italian players as a whole.
Where as Northern Europeans watch a lot of American TV and and generally speak English pretty well, so more are being introduced and have the tools to improve their games if they want.

Unless you live in a dark, rainy, cold, miserable part of the planet, playing internet poker is sinful.

Personally, I get all my vitamin D from the glow of my computer screen.

The reason for the large number of bad Euros playing right now is due to the poker boom that is just has exploded in a couple of places recently. The fish will go broke soon enough and things will be back to normal.
Nah, the broke Euro fish might drop out but not the employed Euro fish with their renewed sense of worth with the euro being so high. Just as long as there is a neteller and their ability to reload, they will keep on coming. Viva the European fish!

I have a very biased opinion, but the Netherlands/Holland is kicking ass for being such a small country.
