I can understand where DN is coming from in his "defense" of EL. Basically loaning people money back and forth is an accepted part of high stakes poker culture. EL owes OP money, but OP isn't used to this culture and even though he rightfully deserves the money that EL owes him, he goes on an internet forum and outs him to the whole poker community about how much debt he owes, what a scumbag he is, etc. and this is all over $2800. Not only is it a huge faux pas, it hurts his reputation and thus his livelihood and hurts his chances of paying back this and other debts. EL probably did deserve to get outed now that we know how much of a degen he is but DN is saying that no "old school" player would ever do this and would either try to resolve the issue with EL or just write off the debt.

I'm not defending EL. He's obv a total scumbag. I'm just saying that I get DN's observations of new vs old school players and how they would've handled the situation. The OP didn't handle it like an old school player but he did get paid back. So maybe more players should use this tactic. But "old school" players will probably see it as crossing the line and that's the "generational" divide that DN is talking about.

All of daniels arguments are basically void due to coltranedogs post. This isnt some oldschool newschool situation, and its certainly not about 2800.

Daniel says that the “poker world has always been a weird place.” He talks about owing and being owed and it being “no big deal.” If, indeed, it’s no big deal between the two people involved, then that’s fine.

But when a person asks for what they’re owed and is given a run-around, that is a big deal. It’s stealing. To minimize it by saying it’s “excepting a stranger to conform to a culture he wasn’t either part of, or aware of” is ridiculous. A culture that accepts welching and lying is not just a weird one. It’s a criminal one.
