You sure about that?

He was posting on Facebook as recently as 11:35pm PST on November 30.

If he did die, it must have been sudden and unexpected. I'll shoot him a message and see if he answers. I hope it's not true. I like the guy.

So either he was misinformed, or Dusty is gone. Seems much more likely to be the latter.

Had Dusty on my show once, and it was a great interview. I guess he won't be responding to my FB message.

Schmidt is better-known for his online poker persona "Leatherass" than for his golf game. But if it weren't for a health problem, perhaps it would be the other way around.

He discovered golf at a young age and threw himself into perfecting his game. From about age 19 to 23, Schmidt was an on and off professional golfer and was pretty close to making the PGA tour when he suffered a heart attack.

While recovering, he had to give up golf, but transferred that competitive drive to playing online poker. Schmidt ended up making more money playing online than he did in his family's business, so he quit to play full time.

Despite a new profession, the golf bug never left. He started playing again when he was healthy and has continued to work back to his former status.
health issues wasn't something new to Dusty, so all things point to his death being reported correctly. RIP!

Wow. RIP if true.

Does anyone know his actual age this year? He couldn't have been more than 45 from my guess.

Wow I remember watching his videos and reading his book Don't Listen to Phil Hellmuth back in the day.

He was an inspirational guy making millions from online poker through hard work at low stakes taking on pretty much zero risk.

Shocking and Sad News

Rest in Peace

No chance it was a suicide.

He had a history of heart problems, including a heart attack in his 20s.

He just put up a Christmas tree for the family on the 27th, posted it on Facebook, and looked very happy. Yes, I know some people posture on Facebook when their life is actually miserable, but he wasn't that guy.

Dusty was just a dude who ran really bad with genetics, and time ran out for him.

RIP

Keep it classy guys.

No idea how anyone could possibly think the “absolutely no politics” rule #1 of NVG wouldn’t apply to a RIP thread.

I remember battling with him in the 200nl/400nl streets on ACR about 10 years ago. He had just signed there as an ambassador. Sucks to hear, especially since he has a family (he was married at least, dont see anything about kids)

His twitter account is currently suspended for violating guidelines. Is it standard to suspend the account of the deceased or is that for other reasons?

His Facebook activity is sparse the past 8 or so years. A couple of right leaning political posts from summer 2020, including a 1 month Facebook ban. But he didn't appear to be some Biden drinks baby blood Qanon nut either.

Then a blog post link that didn't work, but from 2013 titled "This is my brain on poker". I wish I could open and read the post, but looking at the comments its about what mass-multitabling poker had done to his mental health and I guess he retired from it shortly after and got back into golf.

No idea if those mental health issues he was having while grinding poker went away when he quit or not.

Sad news if true. I remember him as sort of a pioneer in terms of work ethic in the poker landscape. At a time when very few poker players were truly professional in their approach he was one of the first to preach the importance of having a smart, steady schedule, putting in as many efficient hours as possible while playing the softest tables available (he got a lot of flak from the 2+2 community for being so rigorous in his game selection). He consistently put in 100k hands month after month for many years with a winrate of 1$ per hand playing mainly 2/4-5/10. Basically became a multi-millonaire just playing variance-free midstakes for a few years. RIP.
