GG Doyle. One of my fondest poker related memories is meeting him in the wee hours of the morning at the Golden Nugget. I believe it was the year after Moneymaker won. They were playing in a roped off area in what was the new poker room at the Golden Nugget at the time. I was playing sit n gos at the next table. That game broke and I circled around and headed him and Mike Matusow off. Doyle spent a solid ten minutes chatting with me and I even bothered him for an autograph. Mike split tight away.

The next day I am standing in line registering for the main event and he rolled by and waved calling me by name.

In that first game, who is the fish they were taking money from? Daniel? I mean why would anyone play in that game without whales at the table?

Got my PokerGo money's worth in one night watching his last final table, and I don't even play 2-7 Lowball. It was funny watching Alexander give him the stare to try and get a read. Good luck with that!

It says it all that he is still a realistic contender in today's toughest games. I can't remember hearing many negative comments about him - he seems to be one of the game's true gents.

Good luck to him and his wife.

The money and the poker and the fame, yadda yadda yadda. The man's been married 57 years, and damn if that ain't an accomplishment.

One of my favorite lines from his autobiography: "I started with nothing, and I still have most of it."

unless i read it wrong - all he said was he would probably never play a poker tournament again? Dont think he's retiring from cash games? By all accounts he's still winning in those games, which at 84 is pretty damn impressive, as far as the old "test of time" element goes I think we can agree he's passed!

You read it wrong.

He's also saying goodbye to Bobby's Room to be with his ailing wife.

Way back in 2001-02, I was propping for a site called Highlands. Doyle initially endorsed the site, then it changed owners and he distanced himself. The new owners fraudulently kept his photo up.

Highlands went belly up. Props were owed (if I remember correctly) somewhere around $50k. Doyle made us whole. Hell of an unnecessary gesture.

Really sad to see him go. In a community that all too often lacks character and integrity Doyle showed us what it meant to be a good person as well as what it meant to be poker player.

Poker is like the KGB, nobody can ever leave! lol

I wish him the best for a long retirement, watched him a lot on tv over the years and always seemed a very nice guy as well as the legend of the game.

Last WSOP event...makes me think that he will donk around the 'fun' stuff like Seniors events or the occasional mixed-game tournament that does not carry the WSOP branding.

He did an interview with CardPlayer:

Quote:
I’ve been married for 57 years and my wife is not in very good health. She can’t go to sleep until I come home. So I play in cash games just about every day when there is one running, and I can get home at 9:00 or 10:00 at night. But if you play in a tournament and you do well, you can’t get home until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning, so that’s what keeps me from playing in them. I think I could still do it, I am physically able to handle the hours. I’ve always had great endurance, which is a blessing, but I feel guilty if I leave the house with my wife in poor health. I feel like I should be there with her, so I think I plan on retiring after this summer and spending all my time with her.
He also said he might play in the 50K event.

Maybe he plans on taking his wife to live out her last years in the fresh air of Montana, never leaving her for long enough to play poker. If he does something like that, then I hope we don't see him for a long time.
