OK.. been reading this thread FOREVER and finally, after many years, I have a Doug Lee story.
(by the way..****;dr)
Anyhow, in Vegas early October, I decide to play the $150 Noon tourney at Venetian. 70 runners.
About 10 hands in, I am in BB. Pocket QQs. I think blinds 25-50. MP raises to 200. Guy to his left is Doug Lee and calls. I am shocked but I thought I was paying attention but there he is. The 2+2 icon himself.
When it gets to me with my QQ, I raise to 600. First raiser goes to 2100 and Doug calls.
I feel the first raiser has AK and when I look at Doug, I feel he has KK or JJ (because if the first guy has an Ace, I figured Doug would not play a lesser Ace).
We start with 8K chips and I figured it was all going in anyhow. I push, 1st guy calls and Doug calls.
(BTW, Doug with sunglasses, looks confident).
1st guy - AK, Doug - KK, Me - QQ
So as they are about to the turnover the flop, I say 'What do I have to worry about? A queen will hit the flop....'
(Side note - the $150 buyin is nothing to sneeze at but also, it is not going to wreck me. If was just racing one-on-one with AK, that is fine [I was hoping my bet would make Doug fold or even the first guy].)
So flop is flipped. Queen in the door.
My eyebrow raises but I don't say anything.
Small side pot. Turn is blank. River is an Ace so initial raiser stays in tourney.
NOWWWW.... the fun begins.
Obviously, I know I lucked out and I don't say a word. Just shrug and wait for chips to be shipped.
The initial raiser seems like a regular grinder but he doesn't say anything. A little fist pump when Ace hits river but is not disrespectful in any manner.
So two guys are staying and one guy is leaving.
At least one guy SHOULD be leaving.
Doug remains seated and then the lecture begins...
"How can you 3bet with QQ [note: actually 4bet because I pushed all in and they both called"
"Didn't you know you were beat?"
"What is your problem?'
.............he is STILL seated........
Now the first raiser looks at Doug and stacks his chips but is VERY unhappy at Doug's monologue.
I...on the other hand....just hear the general tone of his voice and understand his frustration .... yet the lecture tone now has my attention...
Doug, now stands, and IS STILL TALKING AT ME...
Now, if you told me I could pay $150 and stack Doug Lee but I had to leave the very next hand with AA cracked vs. 72 off, I would have paid it in 2 secs because I have READ this thread.
I -KNOW- at least -MOST- of it has to have some truth in it but I am fair. I reserve judgement FOR YEARS and yet, I have ALL OF THE EVIDENCE I need during the 2+ minutes after the hand concludes.
Doug = Toolbox.
So I look at Doug, I =STILL= have not said a word.
Doug is two steps away from the table and at exactly the same time, the first raiser is now raising his objections of Doug because they have played many tourneys in the past, I turn to look at Doug to say the words I have ALWAYS wanted to say.....
"Doug....see you on the felt".
Doug keeps walking. 1st raiser tells us past history and I just sit there.
I am a luckbox on the cards I was dealt and what I hit on the flop.
I am **THE** luckbox because it was against Doug Lee and I got to say those magic words.
I literally have all the rungood for the next 6 hours. I am chipleader with 3 guys left.
No one wants to deal. Lost big chunk Q-10<AQ on Q-flop.
All-in later with open-end straight draw..GG me.
3rd place..
............but technically because all of the above........
I. WIN.
