Re: Doug Lee, biggest toolbox ever?

Doug Lee Bobblehead

A few years back a nitty friend of mine was waiting in line at the chip counter at Fwoods. Over in the next line Doug Lee says to him "It looks like you recognize me and are trying to figure out who I am".
My friend looked at him and shrugged not acknowledging
whether he had or had not. Doug says "Maybe you saw me on TV I won an event against Jean-Robert Bellande and Jen Harman". At that point my friend did recall him and politely said yes.

Doug proceeded to talk to my friend about the strategy he used to win. He said I tried to trap Jean-Robert and tried to get Harman involved and over committed to pots.

Since then he thought D. Lee was the greatest 'til I showed him the thread.....lololol.

Would love to get the doll for him and leave it on his desk, anyone know where it can be purchased?

Wish he'd made a hand puppet<insert joke here>.

Re: Doug Lee, biggest toolbox ever?

Does anyone think the fact that Doug uses 'ITT' on the zynga thread might be an indicator it's not him? Seems like a term only an experienced forum user would use, I haven't heard of him being on any forums before.

Nah I think Doug looked it up and is using ITT on person to level people into thinking it isn't him, you have fallen into his trap.

I would say Megalomania would be a better fit-

Megalomania is a psycho-pathological condition characterized by delusional fantasies of wealth, power, or omnipotence. 'Megalomania is characterized by an inflated sense of self-esteem and overestimation by persons of their powers and beliefs

I often can't tell the difference between a true megalomaniac or someone who has very low self esteem and over-compensates.

Who knows, they're both usually tools.

I've know Doug over 2 decades and can you tell its nothing more than a very insecure guy who over compensates. He's had all these little tendancies his entire life, a guy like him getting a bit of tv time and winning a poker tournament is gonna come across like this.

one thing that seems to come up in this thread is that Doug is busto, that couldnt be further from the truth. He made a ton of money in Real Estate in Calgary, he owned over 20 properties before values doubled in 2005, he sold most of them off and re-invested well. He is wealthy, make no mistake about it.

I saw Doug Lee Outside of The Olive Garden in Calgary(20 dollar meal restraunt). He was driving a nice vehicle. It was kind of neat running into such an icon. Made me laugh pretty good because this thread is pure gold.

Re: Doug Lee, biggest toolbox ever?

Recently got back from Vegas with a friend. I was sitting at a plo cash table at the time, but my friend who just got sat a 5/10nl table texts me saying "mother****ing doug lee on my left".

As soon as I can, I go find his table to see the legend, hoping to maybe ask him for a photo in a lull in the action. Anyway, I get to the table and find my friend and doug are are heads up in a hand on the turn, with a sizeable pot in the middle, with the board reading:

T95 4

My friend checks, Doug slides out 2 stacks of red with one hand and throws in a black with the other.

My friend asks, "Do you play online poker?"
Doug smirks and looks around the table smiling.
"I'm a businessman. I've only started playing this year."
"I'm new at all this," he says, gesturing around the poker room, while again trying to contain his smile as he shares the moment with the rest of the table. No one else is smiling.

My friend calls.

River: A

My friend checks.
"All in", says Doug quickly and really confidently for about $1200. When all of his money was in the middle, I actually noticed him place his right hand out on the felt in front of him, making sure his ring was visible.

My friend tanks for a bit then calls.

"Flush." Doug says.
"Ah damn", says my friend genuinely. "I have top 2.."

There's a bit of an awkward moment because Doug hasn't tabled his hand, and friend hasnt either, saying something about the hand to his neighbour on his right.

"Yeah unlucky. I put you on that hand though" says Doug loudly, not tabling his hand, but motioning for my friend to muck his hand, while keeping his left hand out and open so as to pull in the pot.

"Yeah, I just didn't think you could have a flush," my friend says, frustratingly tabling his AT

Doug quickly mucks his hand and the dealer pushes the pot towards my friend. It only now dawns on him that he almost just fell for a level 1 Doug Lee angle.

"I don't understand," my friend says, "you had a flush.... this money should be yours?"

Doug Lee doesn't say anything, searching for chips in his pockets.

"But you had a flush you said...? Dealer...? I don't understand."
My friend hasn't stacked any of the chips, pretending to be confused.

The dealer looks super awkward, not sure what to say.

"He was lying," says another reg across the table, "he was trying to steal your money. He always does that."

Doug Lee doesn't say anything, but just gets up and walks away.

This can't possibly be true. A wealthy businessman wouldn't be playing for these stakes or trying to pull some scummy angle every other hand.

Also, from the QJ interviews I doubt Doug has an IQ above 100, to be honest. He seems very very slow...way too slow to be a successful investor.
I know IQ isn't everything, but there is definitely a lower limit in terms of what it takes to be a successful businessman and I think Doug is clearly below that threshold.

Edit: Post above mine is exactly what I'm talking about; I think the story is likely to be true, given the rest of the info itt and what other live players have told me about DL.

Re: Doug Lee, biggest toolbox ever?

Back in 2008, I moved to Calgary to play poker full time. My game of choice was 15-30 or 30-60 Limit hold'em at Elbow River Casino. Such a great game as it ran 24/7 and had alot of action. I ended up crushing it for the 6 months I was there before I moved back home for other reasons.

I was playing 15-30 one night when this smiley guy sat down at the table. The regulars at the table all knew him and were happy to see him. I was fairly new to the city but thought he looked familiar, figured I'd played with him before. He bought in for the minimum and went busto in a couple hands. He rebought again for the minimum and again went busto in a couple hands. I can't quite remember how many times he reloaded, but all I was thinking was " I hope this fish has a bunch of money and stays". He was making horrible plays all night that any mediocre limit player wouldn't make. I remember thinking that he was one of the worst limit players that I've played with there, and that NL would suit him better. So after a few hours and a bunch of rebuys, he had enough. As he was about to leave the table he made a comment something like " good thing I am in the top 10 all time in Canada" and walked away.

After he left I asked my neighbor what the hell he was talking about and he informed me that was Doug Lee, he won a WSOP circuit event. I instantly remembered now where I had seen him. When I got home that night, I dug up my collection of downloaded poker dvd's and watched the event he won. I wish I had of known who he was when I was playing with him, perhaps I would have asked him questions about it and had some good stories to tell.

Flash forward to present time and I finally check out 2+2 after years of hearing about it. I am amazed to see not only a Doug Lee thread, but also how popular it is. I read the whole thread and think it's the best thing ever. I can only hope that it continues and people share stories with the world about the toolbox that is Doug Lee.

are you interested in making some kind of bet on it? I wouldnt consider Doug a genius or even that smart but he certainly isnt dumb either. He got some good advice in the early 2000's that the Calgary real estate market was going to boom and he took full advantage of it. He owned a minimum of 20 properties with various other partners, rented them out for a few years and the market went crazy in 2005 and he made a pretty large profit on them all. Do you think someone has to be smart to invest in real estate, especially a market everyone knew was going to be on the rise?

as far as the limits he plays in cash games, I have no clue, from the stories in here it seems like he plays low but he also drops a ton in 5k+ tournament buy ins and I can promise you he has no backers. My story is the flat out truth and Im happy to make a bet on it, It would be pretty easy to get land titles here in Calgary, show you what he bought and sold them for if you're interested in shipping me some easy money.

Im not saying the stories in this thread are not true, as someone who knows Doug the angle shoots, the goofy bids for attention and recognition are right up his alley and true to his personality, even before he got his 15 minutes.

Re: Doug Lee, biggest toolbox ever?

Pretty sure his toolboxness is more due to his personality traits (desire for attention, desire to be part of the "cool" crowd, which he clearly has never been) than his intelligence. He reminds me of that kid in high school who everyone ripped and played horrible pranks on, and he would just laugh and take it because he thought it meant they liked him, when really they just kept him around to be the butt of jokes and do them favors.

The obviousness of his angle shooting and the fact that everyone who plays against him knows about them certainly suggest he's not a genius, but if it works even one time in 250 it reinforces his desire to do it, to get one over on someone else in his life and make them the butt of his joke, if only in his own mind.

why is that? I know Doug well and he doesnt get backers for a couple of reasons, first, most people dont give him credit for being a very good player so backing is difficult to find and second, he is ridiculously confident in his poker skills which is very in tune with the rest of his personality faults, he thinks he is losing money by getting backed.

I played with this guy before at a Venetian deep stack event. Didn't know who he was until I saw this thread. I don't know what to make of him really, but he was in quite a few pots with me while I was table captain for a couple orbits.
