IMO in no particular order...
durrrr, phil galfond, viktor bloom, scott seiver and jungleman
Remember what I wrote in the very beginning of the blog. This has very little to do with ranking players based on skill. It's just not all that relevant to the list. Being skillful enough to have staying power is all that's required. It's about popularity to the masses and my list of 5 will be very popular to TV audiences in the future for various reasons.
I have not only played with all of the people you mentioned, I've also had lengthy conversations with each of them, including Blom and recently Daniel "wooki3" Cates.
I liked Cates a lot, but based on my read, he hasn't done enough to warrant a position in the top 5. He has no online deal, no TV appearances, and I don't expect him to be all that talkative when he plays on TV.
Galfond is one of my favorite people in poker personally and I thought he came across very well when he played on The Big Game and I'm sure he'll get invited back again. I actually thought he was over 25, but even still, I don't think he has as much "wow" factor as the list I created in terms of being a TV player.
My list wasn't "The top 5 players that 2+2 NVGers cream their pants over" :-) it was based on my many years coming across players who I think the media/public will be drawn too a la Phil Laak, Antonio Esfandiari, Tony G, Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Luke Schwartz, Mike Matusow, etc.
I might not be the best poker player in the world, but I think I'm as qualified as anyone to evaluate talent in terms of how popular they are going to be to the masses.
Also, Scott Siever I thought may have been over 25, but if not he certainly does warrant an honorable mention based on his playing style and easy going table presence. He's a fun loving guy with a somewhat unique look- the Seth Rogan/Jonas Hill love child look :-)
Anyway, I created the list because I thought you guys might enjoy my take on it, and I think it's a solid list.
As for me calling myself Canadian, dude, are you for real? I was born in Canada and am a Canadian citizen raised by Romanian parents... if I called myself American, shouldn't that tilt you even more since it would be a flat out lie?
