the quality of bike is surely going to make a big difference. riding a 5k bike on this journey opposed to a $300 one is going to have a huge impact.

I'm with you on this - you have guys ITT quoting the distances in kilometers, LOL, obviously never been out on those roads

Forget the steep climbs out of Baker and all that, just getting out of the LA Basin and the El Cajon Pass will be a massive undertaking for someone with only, what, a month to prepare??? I'd also have to know more about the rules of the prop, but having driven those highways MANY times in the past, I'd say he never even makes it out of California or even Baker. I know in-shape athletes (like people who have finished multiple Ironmans and coach others) that do a ride from CA to Vegas but even they start after the El Cajon pass

I've also done and crewed multi-day cycling events. You can't ride at night on those highways without an escort vehicle. The vehicle has to have certain lights, signage, etc. If he plans to ride 48 hours straight (and you'd need to in order to make it) then there's basically little to no time to put together that crew.

Plus you'd have to have multiple bicycles - here's a secret, most of those guys on long rides use a lightweight carbon road bike for climbing and then switch to a mountain bike at the summit. The mountain bike provides a more comfortable ride, more room for lights, less chance of flats, etc. But that also means that you need backup equipment for all those bicycles.

I'd be willing to take the same action that Dan fails and I might take odds of him not even making it to Stateline.

Dan would need two escort vehicles, one to protect his rear and another in front to draft

Drafting only helps on flats. Ain't no amount of drafting going to help him on some of those nasty climbs.

Steroids won't help much. EPO, on the other hand...

If there's no drug testing, which it doesn't sound like there is, it's an easy wrap for DB.

He could almost definitely do it without EPO with a little bit of training, but clearly that's a guy who's not beyond taking a few shortcuts here and there. I'd be extremely surprised if he loses this bet.

Wind velocity is a major, major factor that determines the effort needed for cycling.

If Dan can do this mostly with a tail wind it will be easy money.

As someone who's bicycled and extended version of this in about a month without training using a loaded down mountain bike:

I can assure you that LA to Vegas on a road bike with a support vehicle is absolutely doable for anyone with a months worth of training.

100 != 270

And I'm assuming 270 if he lives in a reasonable part of LA; if he's West LA, beach or OC fughedaboudit!

You don't understand. 100 miles, 8000 ft of elevation, on a mountain bike, weighed down with gear, on horribly maintained dirt road, at 12000 feet, in 10 hours...

Is equivalent to doing a double century or more on a road bike.

LA to Vegas in 2 days is easy with the right mindset and training. It is certainly achievable with 2-3 weeks of training.

Obviously you haven't been out on those highways and climbs. There are NO equivalents to 270 miles. We get it dude, you rode 100 miles. That's NOT LA to Vegas.

If you're so sure about this I've already offered action in ITT. I don't see you stepping up and backing Dan.

We need to work on your reading comprehension, son. I said you didn't GROW UP in LA. Anyone who grew up there knows it as the El Cajon Pass. It only became Cajon Pass with the gentrification of Riverside and SB. If you watch LA news with some of the older anchors, traffic people, everyone calls it El Cajon Pass.

Raised in LA, lived in San Gabriel valley, The Valley, Beverly Hills, Palm Springs.

Nice try, though, son.

LOL. If you want to back Dan on THAT route I'll give you 2-1. Do you have any idea how you get to the 14? Don't you have to go around Angeles National Forest to do that. Or even on Angeles Crest? LOL. You need to drive LA more, son.
