All these people arrested for shady stuff are described as professional poker players. This guy seems like a decent player, but poker does not appear to be his main source of income.

Initially, almost everyone charged with something pleads not guilty, but they generally change to guilty. That is what lawyers advise them to do.

From what he pled to, it seems like he doesn't mind hurting people, which is consistent with the famous slow roll.

I suppose if they filed federal charges against the psychic for fraud the psychic would have to plead guilty too.

3% of federal criminal cases go to trial compared to 20% 30 years ago. They have mandatory minimum sentences, so if the prosecutor charges someone with something with those minimums and multiple counts, they get like 100 years without parole if convicted. So almost everyone pleads guilty to lesser charges. Initially, at arraignment, almost everyone pleads not guilty.

If it's "you'll meet a tall, dark handsome stranger" they advertise that as "for entertainment purposes only".

If it's "I guarantee prosperity if you buy my 'astral-clairvoyant-forecast' " then they get sentenced to 10 years.

It is gotten weird with 3% going to trial 20% was more reasonable. The other reason for the high guilty plea and conviction rates with federal cases is they don't usually charge people unless it is a really strong case.

Providing fortune telling services is legal. The psychics in jail were getting people to send money more than for services, using it to get women into prostitution, etc.

With a sports betting service, you could provide recommendations. The charges were for claiming information about what games were fixed, players were injured, etc.

As a poker player, I would say Cory's line was not believable. If you really had inside information as to who would win, you would bet yourself and tell some friends. You wouldn't publish it in a newsletter.

But there are people who are greedy and fall for this. Then they lose on betting and on the newsletter. Sports betting is legal in some places now, so a bunch of them probably complained to the authorities, who eventually did something about it.
