This. Health workers are extremely vulnerable in these situations. Being healthy/unhealthy is one thing, but it really doesn't matter after spending days/weeks stressed out tending to patients with little sleep/food, and casualties piling up.

Americans like to use the word one billion.

Normally and mathematically correct one billion is
One million times one million. However they changed it to 1000x one million.

Nevertheless I could have said one gazillion or whatever would that be any better jeez don't put every word on a scale take it with a brain of salt!

Wasn't that the plot of "The last Stand"? I'm sketchy about the details.

I highely doubt the wsop would be cancelled. There is way too much money on the table that I can’t see them cancelling the series.

However if corona spreads throughout the US.... maybe they cancel. The fact it only kills 2% of people and mainly is older folks with weaker immune systems.... I can’t see them cancelling. Let’s be honest. Coronavirus is super overrated. People die. It’s going to happen regardless.

Again, no. I'm not sure what you're envisioning here, but their medical training doesn't give them some kind of microbe-dodging ability like Neo has with bullets in The Matrix.

I'm sure the precautions they take, and treatment they can get, greatly lowers their susceptibility versus what the general public would have given the same exposure level. But that doesn't reduce the risk to zero, unfortunately.

Billion used to be a million millions, but recently it's been changed to a thousand millions.

Traditionally in UK English Billion meant a million millions, whereas for Americans it was just a thousand millions. Today they are unified in accepting a billion as a thousand millions, afaik.

the thousand million definition has been the standard worldwide for almost 50 years ffs,

FWIW, the British government has asked recently retired health workers to prepare to re-enter the workforce, precisely because health workers are more likely to come into contact with infected people, and then need a few days off work. I don't expect many retirees to jump at the chance of going back to work in hospitals and surgeries though. :/
A parallel problem is that an awful lot of low-paid hospital staff aren't entitled to immediate sick pay if they take time off, so there's actually an incentive for them to keep working (and thus pass on the virus) if they experience minor symptoms. The same problem applies to hospitality/hotel staff too. Many people literally can't afford to take time off work, and this will only help the virus to spread.

It's not a question of if. It's a question of when. The virus cannot be completely contained. The US infection rate might peak (and then fall) well before the WSOP is scheduled to happen, but the speed and spread of the infection will depend on the containment measures the govt institutes. The worst might be over by April/May, or the peak might be delayed until June, for example.

Simplericks obviously has blind trust in the local medical service or he thinks this cannot happen anywhere. And he thinks our docs are superior in knowlegde and equipment. Which might be true or might not be true. I would hope so too as I am not in China. But I doubt it.
Imagine this happens here. Would you think then there was not 19 people dead who actually tried to heal it?

All I know everyone in Europe is going batshit insane..

Did anyone else read this virus came from bats?

Well that's great news for us as we don't have enough health workers and have to outsource for nursing care.

Which I am sure would all bail on us because they want to take care of their own.

I guess we would be screwed here if we really got a pandemic.

Why April/may?
If the incubation time is 29 days max then everyone could be under housearrest until he doesn't show any symptoms released and all could be over in one month.

6 deaths now in Washington. Kind of confirms that genetic sequencing tweet a few days ago which said coronavirus had been spreading there for a lot longer than was thought.

First, not everyone can go hide in their home for a month. Some portion of the populace has to keep basic infrastructure operating plus medical workers can't all stay home.

Look at it like the cruise ship. They had 2600 passengers hiding in their cabins and 1000 crew working to take care of themselves, the passengers, and the ship. It was supposed to be a 14 day quarantine but every time someone got sick if you're being serious about it you need to reset your 14 day timer. That couldn't even work for a cruise ship. There were also cases of Japanese officials getting the virus from their supervision visits to the ship and they were taking a lot of precautions. There's no way you can shut down a city or region for a month and think it's going to be eradicated.

Sure, the virus will be greatly slowed while most of the population is on lockdown and the rest are being extra careful but it won't stop because this is too contagious. As soon as the lockdown ends the bug will start spreading again which is what we're now seeing early signs of in Hubei province in China. If you think 20% of the cruise ship getting sick was a disaster just realize there was a mental health facility in Korea which had 98 of 100 patients test positive. The cruise ship quarantine had many flaws but it was still vastly superior to doing nothing. This bug is just very hard to stop.

I propose: 87 ONLINE gold bracelet events and 14 LIVE gold bracelet events, with the latter restricted to the low turnout super high rollers of 25k buy in or higher.
I’ll play as many live $10k’s as you like. I wouldn’t pay more than $200 to play an online tournament and I’ve played 37k of them. I’m sure the huge majority of WSOP attendees are the same.

Seems to be the leading theory. The highest match was found in a bat and they are also known to host similar types of viruses.

This bug is only hard to stop because we dont stop to travel.
Wtf do you need to travel in the middle of a pandemic?!?
Why can't they just ban all travel for 4 weeks?

You know what would have happened 100 years ago?
Nothing! Because all they had is horses.

Yes it did. But it has nothing in common with the corona virus. It was an influenza. It is more similar to the swine flue.

This one is more like the sars virus. It probably originated the same way in china.
And it's fatality rate is around 9%

They claim you can't get it from packages from China, that if it was on the package it would die off by the time it got to you.
