The last great epidemic was called SARS. It took 8 months to get it contained.

Now we have the Coronavirus which is just starting to spread and seems to be much deadlier than SARS. The WSOP is only 4 months away and the Triton Poker series just got postponed because of the coronavirus.

What are the possibilities that the WSOP 2020 would have to be postponed too?

Could this be the first WSOP that will be played strictly online? What would be the legal mechanics to make this doable even for non-Nevada residents? I think the WSOP organizers should be acting early with regards to this possibility.

(SARS was also coronavirus)
I know we're all referring to this new coronavirus when we say "the coronavirus", but note that coronavirus is a family/umbrella-term for a certain type of virus, a family, to which this new disease belongs. SARS and MERS, and many kinds of common colds, are also coronaviruses.

/boring injection into the conversation

The virus is pretty large in size ~400-500nm in diameter.
Any normal mask should be able to filter it out. If someone sneezes it will take about 3m before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.

When the virus is on a metal surface it will live for at least 12hrs. So remember to wash your hands with soap thoroughly.

The virus can remain active on fabric for 6-12hrs. Normal laundry detergent should kill the virus. You can also put clothing out under the sun to kill it.

Regarding the symptoms it will infect the throat first. You will have a dry, sore throat feeling which will last 3 to 4 days.

Then the virus will blend into the nasal fluid and drips into the trachea and enter the lungs causing pneumonia. This process will take 5-6 days.

With pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You will feel like you are drowning in water. Seek medical attention immediately.

The virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 min. So wash your hands often and don't touch your face.

Also use Betadine Sore Throat gargle often and wear a mask in public places like buses, trains, planes, airports, taxis.

I hope that all future epidemics (including this one) are just as "great" as SARS. The 1918 Flu Pandemic infected 500 million with an estimated 50 million dying (about 675,000 in the US).

Please re-edit your post to replace your usage of "You" with the terms "the patient" or "the victim" or "the person infected". I don't like the sound of the "you" part. Thanks.

That flu (1918) was the same strain as the bird flu of the late 2000's. Luckily it seems like it didn't cause nearly the same problem this time around, nbut it did kill a bunch of people and had the world freaking out just like now, for that reason (what it did that time around in 1918).

But yes, pandemics are one of the great threats to the human race, if not the greatest, so all things of this kind should be taken very seriously, and they are. Because as you maybe don't say, but at least imply, pandemics are about the biggest issue humanity has faced throughout history

edit: To be a bit on topic with this post: This outbreak has plenty of time to escalate or stabilize before the WSOP. Give it two months and we'll know what's up..

One of the major differences between 1918 and 2000's was they didn't have flu vaccines in 1918 and no antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections. Also a very poor understanding of viruses and their transmission. People weren't even advised to wash their hands. The original 1918 strain was particularly bad with people dying within 2 or 3 days of contact until it mutated into something not as deadly.

People are so bad at understanding risk. 650,000 people die of the flu every year and most people won’t even bother to get vaccinated. This virus kills like 100 people and everyone is seriously talking about a pandemic, with more or less no supporting evidence. SARS killed less than 1,000 people.

We're 2 weeks into this outbreak and there are already more confirmed cases of this coronavirus than SARS had in total. It's lucky that it seems a lot less lethal, because the rate of spread is pretty alarming. Extrapolate this rate for another two months or so and see where it ends up (hint: it ends up somewhere not good)

That's like 30% increase in cases daily and compounded daily. Using the "rule of 72", the number of cases would double every 2.4 days. Extrapolated 100 days going forward....I don't even want to know the numbers.

It is looking like Triton and the WSOP are the least of our problems. We're talking the end of our species as we know it.

It’s getting so bad, John Juanda will play in a full biohazard suit
01-31-2020 , 06:06 PM
Well it's reached San Jose now so I'm quite worried. Part of the concern is that people won't know that they are affected for up to 2 wks and that's how it can spread so rapidly/easily.

Like that cruise ship that had 7k people on it, but they only quarantined 2 people is so dumb from a containment perspective.

Might have to exclude people from China from playing WSOP. China was the 5th largest country in Main Event registrations last year at 117 players in the Main Event.

it'd be better to screen people who look like they haven't bathed and screen people for hand washing when leaving the bathroom. It's disgusting to see people that walk out of a stall and just walk straight out. Like these slobs don't even have any shame.

How long on a poker chip, 15 years? Seems like a pretty septic surface.

It will be mutated into the super bug that triggers the apocalypse. Ironically the death of humanity will coincide with the death of live poker. Who would have thought.
