Moving forward (if this thread actually goes forward), standard NVG rules of conduct apply. No more gay jokes, and no attacking of posters (rather than attacking of posts).

Ahh, the guys probably going to get fired anyway for just sucking at his commentating job, much less for starting this firestorm.

+1. Same rules should apply for everyone. I got a 20 pt infraction for calling someone a moran in NVG. Hope that's the same for everyone ITT who has used that term.

I have no desire to be "equal" to men in all respects, nor do I think that's even possible. But if you think that there still aren't men who are telling women that they are dumber and weaker and worth less than men, you're sadly mistaken.

By the same token, telling LGBT people that they aren't normal or moral, or using gay slurs to belittle others or to make jokes about weakness, is inherently derogatory.

It's got nothing to do with political correctness and everything to do with common sense and common politeness. No one deserves to be denigrated for being who they are.

I'm pretty sure it won't because the same person was bypassing the profanity filter at the same time the name calling was going on and seems to be a pet around here.

Wherever you are 'form' will catch up - I believe UK was one of the first countries to propose and accept same sex marriage. How many states in the US is this legal in??

Calling someone a ****** or spastic is way more offensive in UK. Think UK gave that up about 20 years ago.

At the pubs I play in locally the term "gay raise" is thrown about quite a lot, it's really tilting imo. PC or not PC it can still be seen as offensive to some people.

Also, OP is my hero

Nobody is immune from infractions from me personally, and I intend to watch this thread closely going forward. If you have anything else to say on this matter, take it to PM or start an ATF thread, since discussion of moderator actions is outside the scope of an NVG thread.
11-13-2011 , 02:39 PM
Look, it's simple. If a gay person objects to somebody using the term 'gay' or indeed, being called 'a ****ing lesbian' - don't say it. If a disabled person objects to being called a ******, or even if they object to being called 'disabled' as ridiculous as it might sound to you - don't say it. Forget about the evils of political correctness and the thought police or whatever else you might think up as an excuse to justify the fact that in reality you are just being a prick.

fwiw i was given an infraction from posts i made itt, and i hope i wasn't the only one.

"Gay bet" is obviously offensive. It's using "gay" to stand in for something along the lines of "weak, annoying." People consistently have a tone of disdain or mild disgust in their voice when they say it.

I'm not about to tell you what you can or can't say but if you're going to use "gay" as a term of general derision, ****ing own up to the fact that you're being a bit of a bigot. "Everyone says that in London!" is a pathetically weak excuse.

To add to this, when you are talking to someone from a different country/upbringing/culture, its just plain common courtesy to assume that some things might not be the same and to be respectful of that. So the excuse that 'everyone does it in London' makes the whole situation even more insulting to me.

This is BS, isn't it? This isn't the same as using the word lift for elevator or *** for cigarette (feel free to correct me if you're English). It sounds like the same way the term "gay" is often used in America. It has become interchangeable with any negative adjective be it bad, stupid, etc. That's not unique to English vernacular. While this is true and I catch myself saying it as well, I don't believe Selbst is wrong to get angry over it. Just substitute a racial term in there and you'll see why. He meant "stupid" when he said "gay" and she rightly took offense to the connotation.

There is an awful lot of socially accepted prejudice toward the homosexual community (as well as those who are bisexual). Its irked me for a long time that although most seem to know they should at least pretend that they're not racist, bigotry versus the gay community seems perfectly okay. If I were her, I would have said something as well.

It appears I've misunderstood something here after all. What was supposed to be the British term? "Gay" or "f'ing lesbian?" Eh, whatever, my post has some relevance on a philosophical level anyway, even if I've gotten the details of the story wrong.

No, it's you who interpret a minraise as a weak raise. It might be a very strong raise, a tricky raise or a bluffraise. Those are other adjectives well suited and maybe even better suited for the gayraise.

I think your conclusion is weak.

Also "****ing lesbian" is completely out of line no matter what context it was used in.
Completely out of line yeah. Not inexcusable. We save that word for worse things methinks.

And if anyone gets offended by gaybet, the problem is in you and not society. Lighten up. Most of us swallow crap like that everyday.

This is ridiculous. You can't comprehend why someone who is gay might be offended when someone uses the word gay to describe something weak/silly/ectetera? Just because some people use it thoughtlessly as a random expression without any real ill intent doesn't mean that the term is innocent of any and all negative connotations.

But sure, people can choose not to get bothered by it. Except that that's just not the way the world works; people get offended by words all the time, and plenty of words like ****** and **** and whop and ***** are considered derogatory. The problem is societal and you're being willfully ignorant if you think otherwise.

You really should read what he posts before you rip him.

I read it. Pretty typical defense to try and say, "nuh-uh, what I really meant was "tricky" not "weak"".

Also pretty much bull****, at least in America. I don't live in London so IDK how it's typically used there.

But if it really does mean something innocent to Londoners, why wouldn't they just stop using it if they knew it was offensive to some LGBT people? Because it's not that innocent, LDO, and even in more enlightened countries like England there's still plenty of homophobia, both obvious and latent.

It amazes me that OP is English. And I know they have schools in Glastonbury and they might even have a few in London.

Might be wrong though,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

yeah, i typed, poasted but decided to delete

But we are here to serve the US so should ensure that Euro shows are made mainly for audiences from another continent

That's not to say I use the term myself thou', I just aware that we attach less of a stigma to the word - it has many other meanings

I agree, it shouldn't be used. But going bat**** crazy about it doesn't help win people to the cause. I don't live in England but enough people who do have said it's common there. Maybe gay doesn't mean what it does here? The first time someone from England asked me for a cigarette, I nearly dropped my teeth. <---How's THAT for IRONY?
