His unique comedic genius didn't stop there, he recognized my buddy and I from the first show and sat at our table during the middle act. Now this was no normal middle act, this was quite possibly the worst comedian in the history of comedy. He was a guy whose schtick was that he was an atheist, but not only that he was the most hardcore atheist ever and every joke was about how much of an atheist he really was. Well Norm knew this guy was going to bomb, so there he was sitting at our table cackling at the top of his voice over every non punchline. Whole place was groaning four minutes in, except our guest of honor who was loving every minute.

One of my best friends and I would wait for Norm tickets like most people wait for concerts and sporting events. The guy had the most unique take on the world, constantly searching for the perfect joke and never taking the easy punch line. My favorite memory was at the small showroom at the South Point where I probably saw him 8 times. In between making us die laughing, I am sitting front row and he asks me what I do for a living. We begin to talk for five minutes about poker during the set, he invites me backstage to continue our gambling conversation, and then just lays into how boring my buddy who is an accountant.

It's one thing to be funny, its a whole different thing to do anything for a laugh. He got fired from just about every hollywood job he ever had because of that drive. When the head of NBC whose best friend was OJ Simpson told him to stop with the constant OJ jokes, he shoehorned in every OJ joke he could think of. When comedy central tells him he needs to be brutal during the roast of Bob Saget, he reads from a the softest joke book from 1950. When the University of Iowa sold 10s of thousands of tickets but told him about what he couldn't say, he brought out his most lude set and laughed as thousands of people ran away from their seats. He has been banned for three decades at ESPN after ignoring the producers and having the funniest opening monologue at any awards show in history. He was uncompromisingly dedicated to the art of joke telling, while at the same time underselling how incredibly well read and analytical he really was. He didn't even tell those closest to him that he had cancer so as not to get in the way of making the audience laugh.

I haven't been able to start once again going down that Norm Macdonald youtube tunnel, but I can't wait for when I am able to again. Just remember, board is spelled "bored" and there are some things they can't take away from you, unless you kill your wife and waiter.
Fantastic post Balbomb, thanks for sharing.

Great post bomb.

And the joke having a happy ending, Andy wasn’t gay, he was raped, was one of the funniest things I ever saw.

That was a very nice tribute Balbomb.

He truly was one of a kind, which is just so rare these days. It’s a testament to just how unique and special Norm was when you hear famous comedians speak with such reverence whenever his name came up. They worshipped him.

I liked Norm's human side. His appearance on the last letterman show, the end of his roast of Saget, and then I just read he sent Saget a text just telling him he loved him a month ago. That was his goodbye.

I'll end with my favorite SNL line. "Hey hey, easy with that, that's my lucky stabbing hat."

After decades of not appreciating Norm or really paying much attention to him at all, this story opened my eyes and had me laughing so hard, I've spent countless hours ever since listening or watching anything with Norm in it.

This is so damn funny imo:

So Howard Stern alledged that "Rounders" was based, in part, on Norm stories?

This starts at 1:09

I've been watching Norm videos on Youtube for years, but I had never heard that one before ...

he denies it but he went to the same club (mayfair iirc) as shown in rounders
also, the writer of rounders was a fan of norm macdonald
but likely its more based on the mayfair and the typical underground poker players that came there than just norm

Daily Beast is a partisan liberal rag. It’s no surprise this filth publication would print a post-death hit-piece on a right of center comedian. OP who posted it “for balance” is a douche too.

Yeah, obviously I’m a douche. You’re a douche, he’s a douche, they are douches, we are all douches.
But some of us try to control it.

Never having heard of Norm MacDonald I found it interesting that he was lauded here as some great comic genius, and then appeared on a comedians group with a reference to some questionable actions, and some questionable humour.

Anyway, I’ll get back to my struggles against douchery and leave you to yours.

if you felt the need to post that piece of **** article "for balance" you are indeed a douche

a comedian made sexist jokes and there is a picture where, you cannot see it, but obviously is grabbing ass. Lets metoo him right after he is death, that will show some class.
If there was 1 person he trusted it was Lori Jo, this is just mud throwing from female comedians we never heard of and some gossip writer who is braindead. carry on

A comedian who defended Racist Roseanne and Lecherous Louis CK and then followed up with comments on Down’s syndrome people.
On the record.

But whatever. Maybe we should judge the art, not the artist. If he made you laugh then that’s fine.

if you never heard of him you only heard stories about him defending roseanne & louis and the fact that you read the daily beast confirms you are more interested in gossip than facts

he claimed with both louis & roseanne that the victim had it worse but they were close friends and he didnt believe they deserved all the consequences compared to their actions... Roseanna was an ignorant tweet, lets take everything from her.. its a trend in cancel culture but he felt it was unjust. But ever so clearly said that obviously the victims had it worse

Claimed that he made us laugh therfore its fine is ridiculous (for norm lovers, pun intended). Cosby also made me laugh, Saville made me laugh, but you'll never hear me say anything positive about them now

You are clearly very poorly informed, and so is the daily beast.
You should do some research on who wrote that article and on sites with the same level of "hunger for the truth" (ie. reddit) its a very well known fact that she gets paid so make up dirt about meghan markle... just sayin

Could post a million of his jokes but this one seemed appropriate in response to that bs posing as an article (almost certainly he just added the last line for utmost effect live on air).
