Im no lawyer and have no clue on the details of KY gaming laws, but could "different set of rules" simply mean charging a membership fee instead of rake, which I am sure will be the business model of this cardroom, plus donating "profits" to charity.

There was an issue in GA this year with the Little Kings and Queens charity cardroom near Atlanta and they got shut down this summer. Apparently they weren't giving as much to charity as they claimed. Hopefully nothing similar comes of this place.

I'm not saying Chris Moneymaker is opening an illegal operation, but the only article I found suggests that Kentucky is very hard line and that there is no legal method of doing so, except perhaps if it falls within, ""As a note, some charitable organizations may be able to operate certain games of chance under a slightly different set of rules." So maybe it's being done like that?

That's just that article though, so clarification from someone who really knows about the Kentucky laws would be useful.
There is another room in KY that has been operating for something like 2 years or more now. I would guess that Chris is basing the operation of his room on the manner in which that room is operating. And that other room has also been operating very openly, they are listed on Poker Atlas, and so on. I am not an expert on the laws in KY, but clearly there must be some space for this to happen, given the presence of this other poker room that has been running so long.

1. Thanks Greg for alerting me to this thread,
2. I spent a lot of time and money to ensure that the social club was operating legally in the state of Kentucky
3. Happy to answer questions the best I can

Is this out of the way location a test kitchen, with future expansion plans into the bigger population centers?

Speaking of test kitchens are there any plans to team up with local restaurants to source a good menu? The best game I ever played at had the best chef of any game I ever played at. People would lose and still leave happy.

I am very curious to know if this action is the result of a legal threat from McCracken County or the City of Paducah? Or is it a legal threat from the State of Kentucky? Or was it a management issue like not making payroll or paying players or something like that?

If it's a threat from the State then the other clubs could be in similar jeopardy. If it's a local issue then presumably other clubs could still be successful.

So Chris was once employed/contracted by pokerstars.

Pokerstars paid the state of KY a gigantic 9 figure settlement a few years back. They are persona non grata in the state.

So now we have a former representative of a company that the state has banned from running a poker website in the state... opening a live poker room in a state where the only form of legal poker is charity poker where the statue says that all games must give 50% of the prizepool to charity and no game can last longer than 6 hours.

Chris if your lurking in this thread... I can pretty much tell you why your room isnt running anymore in 2 words:

Churchill Downs

I mean, its not officially them, but do some digging. They have a monopoly on gaming in the state.

Just to remind everyone, Churchill's historical racing machines were found to be unconstitutional. KY Supreme court said they were unlawful.

Churchill thought they were using a legal loophole to bring slot machines into the state that were based on past pari-mutuel racing results.

So does Churchill stop operating the slots? Nope. It was businesss as usual. Remember the whole premise of KY suing an unlawful gaming operator in their state...

Churchill got the exact opposite treatment. Churchill made a few phone calls and suddenly... The state law changed and now horse racing based slots are legal and Churchill isnt liable for paying back same damages to the state the Pokerstars did. Lawyers are trying this.. and they are failing.

Chris i hate to say this... Seems like the only person making money here is the lawyer you hired.

Like someone else ITT said, there does seem to be other social poker rooms running in Eastern KY. I am not an attorney, but I think the writing is on the wall for these operations. We will see what happens. I wonder if Moneymaker's name recognition has sparked some sort of second-look at these types of operations? Probably sparked a lot of NIMBY interest as well.

Regarding the other rooms that are operating...Having a poker room in eastern ky is... a business...and that area needs businesses of any kind.

Not surprised at all that no one has come after them.

Cock-fighting is pretty big in that part of the country.

It's a disgusting and cruel activity but it's a pretty open secret that this happens. I don't know, I bring this up because people in this area may be more tolerable to poker rooms operating in that part of the country versus CF-ing.

Eastern KY is probably one of the poorest places in America and it's a damn shame because it doesn't have to be that way.

I don't know the numbers but from what I saw when I was working in that area years ago, yikes... and it's only gotten worse from what I hear. I don't think any local government is going to turn away out of town dollars that wouldn't normally come to that part of the state..... until it gets on the radar of the higher ups. I bet moneymaker's name recognition invited scrutiny.

Nope. I doubt CD had anything to do with it. It was a county level decision, with the previous county DA giving written permission to Chris. Then the new DA takes over, and almost immediately rescinds that permission. There are other similar clubs currently operating in Western KY (per Poker Atlas). But they are in different counties. It really just comes down to this one DA who is a giant assclown.

It'll be interesting to see if Chris is willing to fight this in court. I presume he won't make any statements if he is planning a court battle.

My thought is that if the historical racing machines (slot machines) were denied at the Supreme Court level. A poker social club is going to have serious issues.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting some executive in the racing industry made a phone call to get Chris's room shutdown.

I am referencing the tendency for the state to do anything it can to "Protect the horse racing industry" as it is called.

An example of this would be the fact that the sports wagering bill specifically gives the horse racing tracks in the state the sole ability to process sports wagers. Doesn't that lock out 95%+ of the sports betting vendors?
