I'm not very informed about the Chinese poker market, but am interested in reading opinions on how this news will affect poker in China as well as any feedback from local players.

http://www.asgam.com/news/item/4612-...9em-poker.html

"China has launched a sweeping crackdown on online poker applications after authorities announced that poker will no longer be recognized as a competitive sport.

The crackdown, which will ban the promotion of Texas Hold’em via social media applications, will have huge implications for the industry in China.

According to Chinese media reports, the ban will require all apps offering any form of social poker game to be shut down and removed from app stores by 1 June. Social media channels such as WeChat will also be banned from promoting any form of Texas Hold’em product."

"Inside Asian Gaming has been informed that Tencent, developer of WeChat, has already taken down its World Series of Poker app."

Trade war is on !!! Make the WSOP great again !

File a complaint before the WTO, like Antigua did successfully.... what, what ? The US withdrew gambling from its WTO coverage after Antigua won ?

Then, issue an Executive Order barring US firms from participating in live casino gambling operations in Macau !!! ,,,, wait, what's that Sheldon ?

Okay, then..... slap a tariff on all pai gow tiles imported into the US and protect Poker, America's Game

I think its still gg. If new recreational chinese players can't install the app on their iphones or tablets or whatever, I can't see there really being much of a market anymore. The social media ban is pretty crippling as well in terms of clubs marketing themselves.

Don't want it to end really and part of me hopes there's a silver lining, but been a good ride I guess

I have a feeling the Adelson machine and what's left of the former Wynn machine somehow played a role in all of this. Could be those forces wanted to prevent any craze like the one that happened around 2004 in the US.

Pretty amazing that multi-national corporations (tencent and others) stopped offering hold'em before legislation is anywhere close to being enforced. That's power. Corporations turning down increased profit margin to avoid getting on the government's bad side.

I would have expected a sale of the company before this announcement, someone likely didn't put enough lipstick on the pig in time.

if enough politicians understand skin gambling or lootboxes or whatever, they might do something. same as in the 'western world'.

besides that, why should this against global trade agreements? if you outlaw a product in your country, then it's outlawed. i can't order pot in the EU, just b/c it's legal in the Netherlands.

the only case trade agreements might apply, if a country is in a trade union and one country outlaws foreign products, but not the national products (like it happened in the EU, where some countries 'banned' gambling, but allowed a national monopoly ... but even then the EU was like "yeah don't do that .. but well").

Pot and gambling are banned for legitimate safety and security concerns. Banning an app that CAN facilitate gambling through private agreements amounts to thought policing.

this wont have much affect on poker in china. Online gambling has been illegal in china since forever. Asia facing gaming Operators will still serve the china market with multiple back up domains, once one domain gets blocked they open another one. They're all illegal anyway.
