What you might see as acting like a prick I see an agency of innumerable complex coping mechanisms which have evolved to lend some semblance of normality to everyday conversation and interaction.
Because when someone asks you how you're day is going, you might need to come up with some response that's socially acceptable, non-deviant and completely inaccurate -
