I didnt want to go and post this story but since it involves poker and a scam I figure I'm compelled.

May 13th,14th,15th of this year I played in a charity poker tournament advertising Wsop seats as first place prizes along with other stuff like concert tickets ....

http://chipsforcharity.org/currentTourney.php

Here is the link above.

I took 2nd the first night and won my choice of concert tickets . They had a few on hand and others (artists) would be available to me later if I chose to wait. I chose Kid Rock for August 27th in Charlotte . Those tickets werent on hand and I was told someone would be contacting me as soon as those tickets came in. I also received a nicely printed award telling me I had won.

After many emails to Jack Walls and finally no resolve I have to say that I feel I have been scammed. I was told in every correspondence that I would get those tickets all the way up until two days AFTER the show . Then I didnt get any response until mid september and then that I would be given face value of the tickets. I waited a month. still no check or tickets. Finally after asking one more time on November 6th and getting no response I emailed him again Nov. 17th and told him that I was coming to 2p2 and telling the community. He snap emailed me back (

Hey Shaun,

Our accounting department sent out your ticket reimbursement today. I am once again sorry for it taking so long due to the ticket problems. All other prizes from our event have been paid, and I guarantee that we are in no way a scam. I do realize it has been a while, but it was due to circumstances out of our control. Hope you have a great weekend and let me know when you receive the reimbursement.
Sincerely,
Jack Walls
President
United Cancer Alliance

I believe if it went out on the 17th like he says it would be here by today November 29th.

Be warned people. you might not get paid when playing these tournaments

http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/...warpig/017.jpg

Also, there were "pros" on hand for this event and for future events. If you are gonna be sponsored or donate ur time to these events, please make sure its a legitimate charity and not scammers

Here's a summary of what's happened in the thread so far:

The Organization:
UCARE - United Cancer Alliance Reaching Everyone
http://www.ucareamerica.org/
http://www.ucarecharitypokertour.com/

Potentially False Claims:

1. On the UCARE facebook page, during evening of Fri. Dec 2, UCARE claimed to have received referrals from the American Cancer Society. (This post was deleted the morning of Sat. Dec. 3, and the entire facebook page was taken down later that afternoon, but prior, it was c/p’d here)
a. ACS does not have UCARE listed in their 'Support Programs and Services' for Charlotte, NC, ucare's home office.
2. Jack Walls (President&CEO of UCARE) created a fake testimonial on 2+2 under the alias username “jonnyray” in which he claimed to have a 9 year old son with cancer who was helped by UCARE. Account was IP matched to Jack Walls (JW1979).

Media Coverage / Watchdogs:

1. Better Business Bureau
a. UCARE does not meet 10 of the BBB’s 20 Standards for Charity Accountability
. In 3 of these, UCARE failed to meet standards. In 7, BBB was unable to verify whether or not UCARE was in compliance.

2. Melanie Payne - Consumer Reporter, News-Press.com
a. “Nonprofit seems a bit too shady for comfort - October 3, 2011
b. “This shady charity has few answers” - October 2011. (link to transcript here, could not find original link)
c. Key points:
c1. “"The current financial problems were incurred due to a Manager in our Colorado Springs office that embezzled over 19k." - Jack Walls
c2. This caused a UCARE’s employee paycheck to bounce
c3. Publix did not give permission for UCARE to solicit donations outside of their stores. This is true. I think Walls misunderstood the Publix policy. Getting permission from the store manager was only the first step. The group also needed approval from the corporate office. It had to submit financial and insurance information. UCARE didn't do that.
c4. UCARE was not registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, as charities that solicit from the public need to be.
c5. Was unable to obtain IRS form 990 from Jack Walls or the IRS. From Jack due to 'accountant was, "A witness in a court case and is currently not available,"’. 2 weeks after Jack had contacted his accountant, the 990 still was not provided.
3. Ratings Agencies:
a. Major Rating Agencies Charity Navigator and Charity Watch do not list UCARE on their site.
4. Charity Database
a. UCARE is listed on Guidestar.org
b1. From Guidestar: “Institutional funders should note that an organization’s inclusion on guidestar.org does not satisfy IRS Rev. Proc. 2011-33 for verifying charitable status and identifying supporting organizations.”
b2. "Any nonprofit can update their GuideStar report for free to ensure site visitors get the most complete data about their organization."
b3. More information about the guidestar seal and auditing requirements.
5. Short Stacked Radio
a. UCARE lists Short Stacked Radio as a sponsor on their website.
b. Jack Walls interview on SSR. None of this thread content is discussed, only past and upcoming poker events.
c. On Dec 4th, 1:13pm, SSR listed UCARE in their ‘About Us’ section as a charity they support. As of Dec. 4th 7:25pm, this sentence has been removed. UCARE is still listed under the “Sponsors” section of the SSR site, albeit with a broken link.
The Documents:

1. UCARE’s corporate filing

2. UCARE’s application to solicit donations in North Carolina was denied.
a. On a deleted facebook post, UCARE claims they no longer needed NC registration once they got federal 501.3.c staus.
b. UPDATE - The Charitable Solicitation Licensing Division will contact UCARE in order to apply for a license and enter compliance with state law. No punitive action will be taken unless UCARE fails to take the steps to obtain a license.
3. UCARE does have 501.c.3 status as a ‘public charity’
a. EIN# 26-4007849
b. Form 990 Required - Yes
4. UCARE’s 2009 Annual Report,
a. Tshirt costs = $46,819, Merchandise Sales = $161,071.50
b. Total income = $217,071.50, Total Contributions = $82,000 = 37.8%
c. Salaries, $31,891.51, = 14.69% of income
5. UCARE’s self reported financials (2009-2010, plus 2011 projections)
a. 2010
a1. Salaries = $51,026.42 = 16.6%
a2. . Tshirt Costs = $49,500.00, Merchandise Sales = $245,986.32
a3. Total income = $307,586.32, Total Contributions = $130,000.00 = 42.3%
d. 2011 projections:
b1. Tshirt Costs = $65,875.10, Merchandise Sales = $599,822.00
b2. Total income = $1,001,000.00, Total Contributions = $210,000.00 = 21.0%
b3. Salaries = $599,822.00 = 59.9%
6. UCARE’s donation line on their website is not working. Another phone number was found to be disconnected.
a. Names and phone numbers of Office Managers and Event Coordinators (not working)
b. Office Addresses
The IRS Form 990:

a. October 2011, Not available from the IRS or from Jack Walls says Melanie Payne. First it was because the accountant was on Jury Duty. Then a week later the accountant was supposed to, but never did.
b. Not available on major charity reporting sites or from Jack Walls says ProfessionalPoker
c. In a facebook post the night of Fri, Dec 2 (which has since been deleted), UCARE said that he finally had the form 990 in his possession and it would be on 2+2 momentarily. This was a lie.
d. The next night, Sat. Dec 3, Form 990’s for 2009 & 2010 were made available by Jeff Griffith. Many suspect that they are fake because:
d1. They are not dated or signed.
d2. The “Preparer” section is blank despite Jack Walls claims of them being filed by his accountant.
d3. Net Assets are different on 2009 end of year ($10,761) vs the 2010 prior year end of year figure ($10,716).
d4. 2010 form omits all tshirt revenue resulting in a -$60,402 figure in the ‘prior year’ column (as opposed to the $5761 that ‘revenue - expenses’ should have been based on 2009 form.
d5. 2010 form lists $61,600 from “all other contributions/gifts/grants” - but “$0” under fundraising. Note that if money were earned fundraising, Schedule G would have been required describing details about the fundraising events earning over $15k.
d6. The documents appear to have been 2009 form: Created 12/3/2011 3:46:24 PM 2010 form: Created 12/3/2011 5:36:29 PM. 2 Hours seems about right if they were actually written just then and far too long if they were only opened/saved/emailed. Either way, these times do not agree with Jack’s prior facebook statement of already having them in hand on the night of Dec. 2nd.
e. UPDATE - NPTN indicated that they received an electronic copy of UCARE’s 990’s prior to the November 11th Richmond Tournament. I asked for a copy and may be able to reconcile the noted irregulaties in the Bustout provided forms. I will update thread after I talk with NPTN again.

The People - UCARE:

1. Alfred L. Walls III (Jack Walls) (2+2 “JW1979”) (twitter, “jackwalls3”) - UCARE President/CEO, as of April 29, 2011 Jack is the sole member of the UCARE Board of Directors.
a. “...Jack Walls has had $28,000 in IRS tax liens in recent years and declared bankruptcy in 2000.” - Melanie Payne
b. Claims to have a Doctorate in Theology from Emmanuel Baptist University.
b1. EBU appears to be a former degree mill that is no longer in operation. It’s .org website (not .edu) is for sale.
b2. This expose has old screenshots of the former website, including this shady looking popup ad.
c. Considering a lawsuit against 2+2 and is not posting in thread under advice of council.
d.Financially supported
by his fiance Amy Wu and a part time job according to Jeff Griffith., Jack Walls facebook shows his occupation as “Poker Player”.
e. Jack plays in his own UCARE tournaments and is currently 12th in their Points Standings, having earned $535.
QUESTION - does anyone know if Jack pays his buy-in out of pocket or if his entry is waived like the sponsored pros? Also, does anyone know if he keeps his winnings personally, or if they are completely donated to UCARE?
2. Amy Wu - UCARE Treasurer, Co-Board Chair
a. Jack Walls’s girlfriend.
3. Joel “Weezz” Zandrowicz - UCARE Webmaster and Event Planner
a. Created the 2 UCARE websites (from their whois information): ucareamerica.org and ucarecharitypokertour.com
b. Joel is a registered sex offender registered sex offender
c. Joel is described as sleezy by some associates, and defended as reformed by friends who say he was actually one of the people who helped start this non-profit in these blog entries (NSFW).
d. As of at least Sept. 2010, Joel was involved in fundraising operations as shown by his phone number and email included in this brochure.
4. Sandra Zandrowicz - Former Board of Directors Secretary
a. 2009 member of UCARE board of directors (originally listed in the NC secretary of state application)
The People - UCARE Sponsors and Reps:

Jeff Griffith - (@BustoutPoker) Owner Bustout Poker Apparel
a. Dec 2 on twitter, “@jackwalls3 Sad to see how ignorant, judgmental, and venemous some poker players can be on forums! Even worse are the mods that allow it!
b. Jeff Griffith and other sponsored pros were given free tournament entries and had their hotel paid for. (UPDATE - this is totally standard and normal even for charity events)
c. Was provided email correspondance between Jack Walls and tarheelbluez.
d. Bustout donates gift certificates to their website as bounties for knocking out a pro in the UCARE tournaments.
e. Thinks UCARE’s tshirt sales numbers are ‘outlandish’, but he won’t draw conclusion.
NPTN Poker - PlayBarGames
a. exclusive Virginia chapter of the U.C.A.R.E Poker Charity Circuit. The Richmond tournament was NPTN’s first involvement with UCARE and there is no prior personal relationship between NPTN and UCARE.
b. NPTN has been made aware of the possible issues raised in this thread and will be performing their own investigation to confirm or dispute conclusions that others have drawn.
c. Of note - NPTN claims to have been provided an electronic copy of UCARE’s 990s prior to the Richmond tournament. This could clear up any irregularities noted in the version obtained through Bustout. (I asked for a copy from NPTN and will update when I get a chance to compare them)
Dale Frazier - Idea behind Donkey Farm Poker Klub
a. Shirts sell for $15 at UCARE store as outside vendor, of which $2 is donated to UCARE.
b. No other mention of DFPK could be found. They do not appear to have any other presence or storefront aside from the ucare store.
c. It’s possible that DFPK is the nickname of the poker league that Dale’s wife Branda says she plays in under her general interests, but this is a complete guess.
Scott Cooper (twitter “Scott___Cooper”) - Sponsored Rep
a. Dec 1, “@JackWalls3 just a thought I had bro...ur good people”, “@JackWalls3 UCARE will take over the world”, “#ucarepokertour takes over the world in 2012 courtesy of @JackWalls3 and the gang
b. The 2+2 thread started 11/30, it hasn’t been explicitly stated whether Scott’s tweets were in response to the thread and continues to support UCARE, or if the timing is just coincidence and he is unaware.
Jon’s Mexi Grill
a. Hosted a ‘15% of all purchases donated to UCARE’ night in September 2011.

Majestik Poker Tour
a. Has a ‘support UCARE’ page on their website.
Off Tilt Poker Tables
a. Donated 2 tables to UCARE at the Richmond event - these were auctioned off.
Pros who have decided not to support UCARE:
a. Trishelle Cannatella
b. Cris Belkewitch
c. Jennifer Leigh (Jennicide)
c1. Sponsored Pro at the May 2011 UCARE tournament in Durham, NC.
c2. Left with bad impression and decided not to attend any future events.
c3. Did not give permission for her name and likeness to be used by UCARE and is presumably in process of having them removed from their website.
c4. In a public conversation, Jack Walls bragged to her about cheating in a home poker game.
The People - Victims:

Shaun - (tarheelbluez 2+2)
a. played in a UCARE / ChipsForCharity event, May 2011.
b. won 2nd place = chose Kid Rock tickets as prize.
c. After 6 months, and many emails, tickets were not provided despite email that said cash reimbursement was in the mail.
d. Jack Walls blames LiveNation for promising the tickets, but not providing them. Jack also admits to forgetting about tarheelbluez after LiveNation renegged.
e. 2+2 user potsy_in_ny played in the same tournament with tarheelbluez and says it was extremely unorganized and would never play in another UCARE tourney.
f. According to Jack Walls, 2 other people did not receive their prizes at the same Durham tournament. 1 received a separate tournament entry as prize, the other agreed to give up his prize altogether.
Ray Murray - former employee
a. Hired by UCARE via Craigslist ad to collect money outside Publix grocery.
b. Paid by commission, 20% of funds up to $250, plus 1% additional for every $100 over.
c. Paycheck bounced twice - was eventually paid in cash.
Unknown players:
a. In the first post for this 2+2 account, markhoke claims that “There may have been some sort of issue at that previous event but Jack did make it right. And you'll note that whomever he was dealing with in that situation is no longer associated with UCARE.” - I don’t think this who did what to whom was ever elaborated upon.
b. Jeff Griffith noted that a player did not receive a bounty prize following a tournament. (Bustout made good as soon as they were notified of the problem)
The People - Alleged whistleblower who lacks credibility

oldtimerknowsall (2+2 account with just 1 post)
a. claims to be a former employee who stole money from donations he collected since Jack Walls couldn’t pay him. He accuses Jack Walls of pocketing money himself also.

3. NC Secretary of State has been notified.
RESPONSE - UCARE is not licensed to solicit donations in North Carolina. The Charitable Solicitation Licensing Division will contact UCARE in order to apply for a license and enter compliance with state law. No punitive action will be taken unless UCARE fails to take the steps to obtain a license.
4. NC DOJ complaint has been filed.

I think the first step to participating with/in any social charity event is to see if the charity is rated by any of the major rating agencies.
www.charitynavigator.org and www.charitywatch.org/ do not list United Cancer Alliance. That can be a flag.

I'm almost positive boxes would go for higher than that for any real artist at any venue. But how much the seats are worth is meaningless, even if they were only a dollar the point is that a charity tournament not paying out is a huge problem.

ive just never understood charity poker tournaments and especially the people who play them.

here's a better idea:
-play real poker
-donate some money to a charity of your own god damn choice
-lol avoiding degen charity scams and complete transparency as to what you are doing.

The guy who donkboxed me HU asked another player to check it down preflop when they had a shortstack all in ...... Nothing was said about it except by me when I let them know that was BS....

let's hear the other side of the story shall we....

First off, United Cancer Alliance, which is the company that runs these events, has offices in 5 states, including North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, and Colorado and has been around for 3 years and has raised over $400,000 in that span. They are on many charity navigators including two of the largest in the world, Guidestar.org and Justgive.org and they are considered a Guidestar valued partner.

Second, they have been doing charity poker events for over a year and have partners such as Deepstacks, Bustout Poker, Neighborhood Poker Tour, ProPokerGear, BlueShark Optics, OffTilt Poker, and more. If the company was a scam in any way, they would not have such huge names sponsoring them, as they each did background checks before deciding to partner.

Third, in the past year, UCARE has hosted 6 different poker events, each growing bigger over time, and have brought on pros such as Michael Mizrachi, Chino Rheem, Jason Lee, Jennifer Leigh, Cris Belkewitch, and more as well as Radio shows, TV stations, and other celebs from MMA and TV. With this growth, many of the players that come to the events continue to come because they have won seats and prizes, such as our Durham Main Event winner Milan Dragic who won and played in the 2011 WSOP Main Event, and one of our Charlotte winners John Gonzalez, who took his $235 Circuit event seat win and cashed 12th in Biloxi for $2212. Every prize that we give away is donated to us and we have given away WSOP seats, Poker cruises from Ante Up, concert tickets from Live Nation, and more.
What happened here was that Live Nation gave us season tickets to give away to Verizon Wireless Ampiteatre in Charlotte, NC. We had tickets on hand for 7 of the concerts and were told by Live Nation that we would receive the remainder later in the season. He had his choice of concerts to go to, and he chose Kid Rock, which was one of the three tickets that we had not yet received. Live Nation never sent us the remaining tickets and we have been working to try to get reimbursed ourselves from them to reimburse the players that had not received them. One of those players played in our Richmond event for free to cover the tickets, another told us not to worry about it, and the last, Shaun, I told we would reimburse the ticket value if needed. It took us along time to work on the situation with Live Nation, and with everything else going on, I actually forgot about Shaun at one point, by accident. Since then, our accounting department assured me they would send Shaun a check to reimburse him, and I expressed to him that I was sorry for the long wait and to let me know when he received it. This morning, I received an email from him about this post.

United Cancer Alliance does everything it can to help those with cancer, my father is currently diagnosed with cancer as well, so I know the hardships firsthand that it causes, and we try to do everything we can to help those that need it. This company was built for all the right reasons, and I personally take offense to anyone calling it a scam, as I am sure the thousands of people we have helped would feel the same way.

Also, going on the point of bragging about the $42,000 raised in Richmond, not one time did I ever brag about that. If you check and see it is Short Stacked Radio, NPTN, Off-Tilt, Holiday inn, and others that posted and bragged about the money raised. I do not feel the need to brag about the money given out, and actually, as you can see through our 1099's I have taken less than $10k in the past 3 years to run this organization.

I run this charity, and these poker events, because of the difference we are able to make in the lives of those with cancer that need it, and will fight for this organization and those we help every hour of everyday if I have too.

Shaun, your reimbursement should have came, and if not, I will personally make sure it comes, and I understand your frustration, but I must honestly say, to post something like this and to try to hurt an organization that has done so much, because of a small prize that you haven't received, when I have responded to each and every email you have ever sent me, is upsetting to not only myself, but I am sure, those with cancer, to say the least.

These tournaments are put on so that people in the areas can have fun, win prizes, and help those in need, and nothing more. There is no private agenda to screw you or anyone out of the posted prizes, and as with anything, sometimes mistakes are made. We will correct yours and I do hope and pray that you can understand and more fully respect the big picture of what we do!!!

I don't know, you decide to reply to his post by basically spamming your organization telling us all about the big names that play and what you do instead of just apologizing.

Honestly if you came on here without a wall of text advertisement about your events and all your good deeds it would be a lot more convincing, at least from my perspective.

Hello Jack and thanks for stopping in.

Unfortunately we have heard in theses forums on several occasions of poorly run charity tournament and prizes not being fulfilled.

That you responded to each contact does not diminish the fact that the prize was unfulfilled and really reaks of incompetence.

Why isn't UCA listing on any of the charity watch websites? A link to view or download the financial documents of your charity would be appreciated.

Good luck with that.

Seems like the OP waited a reasonable time frame (over half a year) before making notice.

Why not simply take the $ value of the prize OP won (~$100?) out of the operating fund of the charity to pay him out, keep him happy, and prevent against negative PR?

I respect you for raising money for a good cause, but in 6months you could have probably found a better solution than waiting on the third party, even if it meant paying the $$ out of your own pocket!
