5/10 Venetian game some time ~2008. Boring game, so we go around the table introducing ourselves and saying what we do for work. Middle-aged guy no one recognizes says he's a director. Someone asks what he's working on and he says a movie that's been ages in the making but that should be out in the next year or so called Avatar. Some people say 'cool' and not much else is said. That night I look up who's directing the upcoming "Avatar" and sure enough I was playing with James Cameron.

(I don't remember whether he was any good, I only played with him for an hour. And yes, it seems crazy that no one would have recognized him, but keep in mind that he really hadn't done anything front-page since Titanic in '97 so he wasn't the insta-recognize he'd be today.)

I lol'd. It's been forever since I've seen that move but I still remember that line/scene.

heh, Eddie Johnson. He was playing 20-40 lhe at Casino Arizona (as it was known back then), some ppl were talking the NBA, I HATE the NBA and I didn't know who he was and I went on an anti-NBA rant until someone asked 'Don't you know who he is?' When I found out I pulled my shirt over my head and hid for a while. He took it well, though, bec, IMR, what good is a game that gets decided in the last two minutes so often?

Played w/ Connie Hawkins also.

Mekhi Phifer played in the Main Event in 2006 we shared a ride over to the Rio from the Wynn where he was staying. Really nice guy, I didn't know who he was at the time, only that he was Canadian and knew a friend of mine.

Also in 2006 had Gerry Buss, former owner of LA Lakers at my table at a WPT event in Reno. He was probably early 70s at the time. Two hot girls in their early 20s came to the table and he gave each of them a handful of black chips to "play with". Someone at table asked if they were his daughters and he smiled and said no.

In 2007, I had Vince Van Patton's brother at my table for Day 1 of the Main Event. He looks a lot like Vince. I think he was a tennis pro or something like that. I also had Doug Polk at my table in 2015, didn't know who he was until a friend noticed him and told me. My brother had Greg Mueller at his table and kept calling him that hockey guy.

Robin givens and Denise Richards are the same. Both are certainly cute in pictures, but IRL I could easily turn into a stalker of either: absolutely mesmerizing in person. I sat at the next table from Denise in a restaurant and could quite literally not stop staring at her. I was both embarrassed and ashamed, but looking at her was like smoking crack.

I called Robert Fort Hanson a nit at a poker game in a local bar and he chased me out of the place and for two blocks more outside.

Didn't know who he was at the time but thought he looked familiar. That same night Nicholas Cage walked into the poker room and looked around then walked out. Someone told me later who Billy Burke was.

Aussie Darts legend Simon Whitlock turned up at my local (ish) Grosvenor in Portsmouth UK for the £50 1 rebuy/add on, on a random Friday night. Didn't see much of him though, he was playing at the cash table by the first break.

Gene Michaels, yankees player and coach of the past. Was a 20/40 borgata reg. Wears his championship ring. Still does occasional ESPN interviews. Very nice competitive person.

Didn't play with him at Borgata, but saw Michael Phelps nearly attempt to beat down someone in anger over that person taking illegal photos in poker room.

Montell Williams is a 5/10 semi reg at Borg

Not a celeb, but a guy at borg who looks exactly like Bruce Willis, and he claims that he has been propped for sex by both women and men who were certain he was Bruce. You just believe him because of how much they look the same.

I played in the same tournament as snooker player Steve Davies in a pool hall in 2007 in Manchester UK.
We were never on the same table so, actually, it might not have been, I was a few beers in at the time.

I made Jules Holland a cup of tea once and accidentally took the wee out of Johnathan Ross's lisp on the phone.

Basically, I got no story to tell. Sorry.

I played with James Woods at Foxwoods a couple of years ago. He had a young blonde model sweating him for about an hr and then she disappeared. Later on I said hello and he kindly takes a selfie with me. As I'm snapping my arm is around him and he says "My girlfriend might get jealous." I replied "Oh I thought that was your daughter." He started cracking up laughing....I made James Woods laugh! Alas, I did not get much of his chips. We were in maybe 1 pot together and besides, I was star struck.

The truth is that even a lot of the women who play the plain girls, like Joan Cusak or Mayim Bialik, are drop dead gorgeous when you meet them in person.

I was playing the same 2-5 table as him at the Venetian yesterday. The weird thing is that recently I have been rewatching the Sopranos from start to finish, and I'm nearly finished with the last season. I was watching it two days before. So then when I saw him in person there was this flash of recognition that wouldn't have been as strong if I hadn't seen the show in 10 years.

He had headphones on, and nobody was bothering him.

I played BJ with Pete Rose at Aria. He was surrounded by hot younger women. He berated the dealers some while things weren’t going great

Whoa, cool thread. I want to find out where all of those Giants play, too. Maybe San Pablo Lytton? Or Bay 101?

Seems like a great table would be a relatively low-stakes game with a bunch of MLBers. To them, dropping a couple of buy-ins at $2-5 is just a fun night out.

A few years ago I was in Rio, attending a gaming conference, and sat in a game with Ronaldo, (Brazillian Ronaldo, not Portuguese Ronaldo), who held the record at the time for most World Cup goals scored.

About a month ago I was playing 5/10 at the Commerce in LA and there was a guy I recognised but wasn't sure where from. Somebody at the table enquired about my accent, and I said I was Scottish but grew up in Northern Ireland. The guy I vaguely recognised said he did a bit of work in Ireland in a place called "Countarmack". I asked him to repeat it, he said it again, and I went "Oh County Armagh?!" and he laughed and said yes. He asked me to say it a couple more times, which I happily did, and then I said "so you were working in Ireland, what is it you do?" and the table got kinda awkward and he shyly said "I'm an actor."

Spoiler:
Was ****in Don Cheadle

Going for the obscure end of the spectrum here: I once played in a relatively small tournament with the actor who played Beppe in Eastenders. He got knocked out before me and appeared to be getting consoled by some beautiful women who he had brought with him.

See how much difference it would make if you put the word "the" before Rio?

I played 1-2 with William Hung of American Idol. Obscure.

James Woods- not obscure, and plays a lot, so this is not a unique experience. He stacked me in a 2-5 game in Foxwoods, where I've spotted him at least 15 times, and Vegas as well. Not only is he approachable, but he approaches other players himself just to shoot the breeze. Definitely not a sunglasses and headphones "don't talk to me" guy, seems nice.

My wife played with Lon McEachern of ESPN at a tournament at Binion's downtown. We both always watch the Main Event telecasts, so she was excited, but she messed up her facts a little bit, since she texted me "Come on over. I'm at the table with Norm." The next day I played cash with Lon at Binion's. He was super nice, and even patiently listened to my ideas about how to improve the TV coverage. Seemed to be a great guy.
