Not me but my rugby coach (a huge samoan guy ex professional) at school (in england) played jonah lomu in the film 'invictus' about apartheid in south africa starring morgan freeman matt damon directed by clint eastwood. My coach said he played in their home game while shooting the film. Pretty ballaa

The bassist (or maybe the guitarist?) for Queensryche at Mandalay Bay when they were playing a concert at the arena. But not the original guy since this guy was super young. He seemed shocked anyone at the table had ever heard of Queensryche. I think I sang a few lines of "Silent Lucidity" but I was pretty drunk.

Re: Celebrity and (non-poker)famous people you've played with. The more obscure the better!

just remembered another one - I used to be a reg at The Vic in London quite a few years ago and there was a period when Matt Bellamy, lead singer of the band Muse, would come in quite often and play Holdem; this might have even been before they switched to NL so it would've been the old pot limit game. Anyway, I thought he was just a guy who looked like the lead singer of Muse but one of the dealers there confirmed it for me who it was because another dealer there was a massive Muse fan apparently - he seemed a decent player, clearly had studied the game.

Re: Celebrity and (non-poker)famous people you've played with. The more obscure the better!

It wasn't poker, but in the early days of my film production career, I played penny-a-point Gin Rummy with Gene Hackman off and on for four days. We were filming deep in a National Park and I got a job as the "Helicopter Safety Coordinator," because I had flown in a helicopter before and not been killed. All the job meant was that I had to get up whenever someone flew in or out (eight or ten times all day) and make sure nobody wandered into the landing pad. They paid me $200 a day for that, God loves the Movie business.

I spent most of the time playing cards with the Actors and the Drivers. We had hours to kill. Anyway Mr. Hackman already had a reputation for being a bear, but IMO he was just a live wire, brawler kind of guy, he knew what crap was and he had no problem stirring it up. Just a great guy for a 20-year-old kid to sit around with playing cards and listening to tall tales.

What do Teamsters' kids do every day during recess?

Drink coffee and sit and watch the other kids play.

There's a 1/2 game in downtown Portland that's right around the corner from the hotel where all the visiting NBA teams stay, and players and (assistant) coaches drop in on occasion. Only ones I've played with that are remotely worth noting are Tyler Hansbrough and Danilo Gallinari (starting forward for the Nuggets). All others have been backups who I had to be told who they were (usually from people looking up the team's roster). Across the board, players buy in short and are horrible. Coaches are better.

Re: Celebrity and (non-poker)famous people you've played with. The more obscure the better!

I was playing at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas several years ago (2011 maybe?) and chatting with the guy on my left. He was with his wife who was a worker or organizer for Miss USA or Miss Universe pageant (can't remember which) going on at the hotel.

As we played, somehow something came up about music. I can't even remember the conversation, but he seemed knowledgeable so I asked if he was a musician. "I'm a singer," he said. "My name is Lee Greenwood."

Well, I'm clueless and had never heard of him, so I Googled him and saw that he had some famous song about "Proud to be an American." My wife was impressed when I told her about it. Very nice guy.

Great guy. He was at the table next to me at MGM several years ago. One of the players at our table was a huge Dodgers fan, wearing a Dodgers bb cap. He went to talk to him and Orel let the guy wear his World Series ring for a picture with him.

He left a load of his Wembley concert tickets for the dealers. Very nice and down to earth guy.

I guess only those from the UK or who follow snooker will know these...

Jimmy White
Stephen hendry
Steve Davis
Ken Doherty

all played really tight bar White who was an absolute fish and has talked about his gambling addiction in a documentary where he used to go on benders gambling at the horses, dogs, casino and poker

also a few tv soap actors from eastender's James Alexandrou (Martin Fowler) and Ray Panthaki (Ronny)

I played $10-20 or maybe $15-30 limit with Wilford Brimley. He likes to play sometimes apparently. This was in Albuquerque.

For obscure, I played a 1/2 NL home game in San Diego with author/professor/columnist Richard Lederer.

Re: Celebrity and (non-poker)famous people you've played with. The more obscure the better!

Talk about obscure, I played with Robert Curtis Brown in a $1-2 at the Mirage. He played Todd in the movie Trading Places and was in a couple of the High School Musical movies among the 148 acting credits he has on IMDB. He played pretty solid and was very nice and kind of surprised that I recognized him. So was I but he just looked familiar.

Also played with boxer Bobby Czyz in the $1-2 at the Hilton in AC a while back. He was pretty drunk and loose....just the way that I like my women.

Played with Jamie Gold (who hasn't) at the Trop in Vegas when it was his room. He was very nice and played very loose. I think I got it in ahead and lost a relatively small pot to him.

I also saw Manute Bol walking through the Taj during a fight night back in the 90s. People were following him around like the pied piper as it's pretty hard to miss a very black 7'7" man in a burgundy leisure suit.

I used to run into Brimley at the WSOP. He lived in Utah for a lot of years then moved to New Mexico. When asked why he moved to NM he said he wanted to be at least a days drive from the nearest Mormon.

I was playing the ladies event at the WSOP and I said to the woman, I know you are famous. And she was Kim Catrell from Sex in the City. Probably everyone else knew but me. I admit I didn't watch much TV. Men the Master Nguyen gave me his coat the following year in the freezing cold WSOP tent. Nice guy. Sat with Johnny Chan too at a different table.

I once saw Pac Man Jones super late at a craps table in Tunica. I will never forget he was wearing Homer Simpson house shoes. I don't remember much else, I believe both of us were black out drunk by then.
